Calor Gas Bottle Pricing - Phew!!

I seem to remember Morrisons fuel stations being taken over or similar last year and the pumped LPG went up from under £1/litre to £1.30/litre across ALL Morrisons stations overnight.

That's correct; last year Morrisons sold its forecourts to Motor Fuel Group, of which Morrisons has a 20% stake.

I did a LPG fill of our Gasits at Trago this evening, where even at £1.02/litre, the cost was cheaper than buying a replacement cylinder (apart from the 47kg cylinder prices, which seem staggeringly cheaper than expected).

As I understand it you can claim back tax when buying lpg at the garage as you pay 20% and only pay 5% on bottle exchange. You’d have to be using a lot though to make the hassle worth while.

Have thought of this, but not too easy to find a refill operation in the Basingstoke Area. Anyone know of one without travelling many miles just to 'top up'?
We never go out intending to ‘top up’ we have 2x11kg Gaslow and refill when en route!

I'm afraid the answer is no - we travel the South of England to vintage rallies with my ageing tractor spending 3-5 days in a field during the Summer period. So Gas most of the time for cooking, and cooling. Our total average is 700 miles p.a. So although we are not big users (probably 3 bottles p.a.) it hurts when you have to buy a bottle at such prices!
You just need to price up a refillable system and then see how many years it will take you to break even against your 3 bottles a year usage.

The Shell fuel station at Cove Farnborough, just off J4A of the M3 sells LPG. Currently reported at 82p/litre, always call before travelling though.

We always fill up just before home after every trip, at an independent garage and shop called ‘Parkfoot’ that has won many awards, just outside West Malling. (BP & Spar, run as a franchise I guess).
Bakery, butchery, fresh fruit & veg and anything else you might need 👍

4th January LPG was 94.9p per litre and it’s always the cheapest in our part of Kent.

5 minutes off of the M20 for those heading to Dover (or en-route to Newhaven with a tiny detour)

Although I'm a big fan of our refillable bottles, with such little use it probably wouldn't be worth the expense of swapping. Try to find a small independent seller where you'll often pay less.

As a Basingstoke resident can I correct a few things. 1st it's called Amazingstoke. It is in the top ten most wealthiest councils as they invested since the 50's and had the highest amount of square footage of offices per square mile that were rented out to big corporations like Sony, Ericsson, Motorola, Thales hence the wealth created. They are largely being converted to apartments as the new nickname is Dormitorystoke with a 43 minute train journey to Waterloo. It has the highest buildings between Londinium and New York in a straight line. Why pop over the border to Surrey where house prices, council tax, costs are much higher. Moved here on a company relocation in 1991 as its 45 minutes to the gate at LHR, an hour to Gatwick, 20 minutes to Soton airport. 40 minutes to the cruise terminal. Good train to Londininium if required. Under the development in the 80's & 90s there is considerable designated open space meaning no buildings, lots of pathways / cycleways, playing fields, open space. Where we live the development requirements were 1 garage and a double driveway for each house of 3 bedrooms and above, off road parking with 2 bays for 1 bedroom dwellings, how forward looking was that? Don't knock it till you've tried it as they say.

In respect of the OP search for LPG, we often use the Autogas place at Longmore Farm Portable Gas, Park Lane, Finchampstead, RG40 4PT as it is attendant service so you just reverse to the pump, the lady comes out, fills you up, you pay and go. Often on the way home from a trip. Yes you can save a few pennies at the nearby Cove Service Station but it's self service and a pain to get to.

As long as you only stay in the UK, or only do a max two week jaunt to the mainland.

Anyone intending on ever doing a longer than 2 week trip in mainland Europe needs a refillable gas system,
or some other solution such as a conversion to Spanish cylinders.

I’m sorry but I do top up!

If I’m tootling and can take 60% of a cylinder and I see an LPG station I do top up!

Takes all the stress out of looking.

I can’t agree with that. What do you use all that gas for?

We have an lpg pump in town at a convenient place to stop at start of a trip especially if going south. Went on our way out sometime last year, pump out of order (it’s fine now) so even having a local pump is no guarantee. We just got on the app and found somewhere to fill whilst we were away. It was a good place actually, serviced pump in some sort of lorry depot, and cheaper than the pump at home which is self service at a fuel station.

You are agreeing with Shrimp, you are topping up en-route. You are not going out to top up, if I’ve understood correctly what you are saying.

One of the best things we did when our van was built in 2008 was have an Autogas underslung tank fitted. Having a contents gage is a huge help with knowing when to fill up. The cost of gas since has been utterly trivial. Slightly against our better judgement we have a diesel heater not gas so only the fridge and cooker use it. However one does need an up to date app to check where gas can be found, AND check somebody has updated the price recently. Even then we pulled into a service station in Scotland and found the pump had been removed the previous day! In our area Mid Sussex lots of gas pumps have disappeared over the last few years but there is always one close to any route we have taken.

It's about 2 mins from M3 J4A, a doddle to get to.

How long do LPG users (refillable bottle and tank) believe it will be available on forecourts in this country?

Why the focus on forecourts?

It’s a different product for different applications.

Builders merchants, hire shops and LPG installers are a better bet.

Parkfoot website is here.
As you say, they are on the A20 and just off the M20 (exit 4) and not far off M2 (exit 2 or 3).
Ideally placed for anyone driving down to the Dover or the Tunnel .
Also not far from Bearsted C&MHC Campsite (also on the A20 and close to the M20 (exit 8), & M2 (exit 3 or 5)

My motorhome is stored up the hill near Rochester Airport, on the other side of the M2.
In the past we used to use Morrisons in Stood for LPG (and last minute shopping).

Since they have sold their fuel stations and gone from the cheapest to the most expensive LPG in the area.
We now use Parkfoot for LPG and Diesel and last minute shopping.

Parkfoot are consonantly the cheapest LPG supplier in Kent and SE London.
The only other two fuel stations that even try to compete are one just off exit 11 of the M25 in Chertsey and the other on the A21 at Robertsbridge (near Hastings).

In the UK, even in April, I'll go through the best part of an 11kg cylinder in a week.
A bit of cooking, a bit of fridge and a lot of heating!

I agree in the summer it's (almost) zero heating and similar cooking but a lot of Fridge!
But even then 11 kg will not last us a fortnight.

Also Yacht Marinas and any area where the minicabs run on LPG (such as Birmingham, loads of stations and the cheapest LPG in the country most of the time, as there is a lot of competition.)

Two weeks in winter (Xmas and new year) all heating, cooking, and fridge, using gas. I use one 11kg cylinder for the two week period, and that’s in minus numbers and snow in an old Adria.
