I let my C1 licence go at 70 due to buying a lighter van so the daughter could use it. Now looking to change Van's and dont necessarily want to be restricted to 3500kg so took the medical (£55) and applied to reinstate my grandfather right two weeks ago. This morning I got the brown envelope from the DVLA with confirmation that my C1 licence was reinstated.

Now I'm thinking, will it always be this easy? What about at 80?

Any young 80s out there want to share their experience?

When the sugar beet starts there will be hgv drivers over 80 still doing it , so think you’re be ok.

The DVLA will send you a new licence with the C1 entitlement, valid for 3 years. So, every 3 years you need to reapply and submit a new medical. As mentioned, it's not age related.

I am 78 and my C1 medical is due end of this year(near 79). I do not anticipate problems.

However I will probably have swapped it for a Polish licence by then, so do not know what the medical is like, but assuming I pass that I will not need another for 5 years under Polish rules.

As said above it is not age but health which dictates.

well done, i would have thought after a 10 lapse in your C1 you would have to retest. I need to renew my C1 next year @78 but don't see any problems at the moment, I have just had my eyes tested and they were fine, so keep going

He didn’t say he was 80. He just wondered if it would get more difficult as he approached 80.
