AA trying to fix this. Fuses seem OK. He can rig a wire from the starter to touch the engine bay when i want to start it. Not ideal for a long journey and not sure if that is good for the comfortmatic gear box anyway. Any ideas or suggestions gratefully received. He is not really sure of the cause.

I will post a separate thread but also to say Fiat recovery on extended warranty only available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm!!

Looking to be v expensive

Thanks

New starter motor motor needed, shouldn't be that expensive.

If the actual starter motor had failed the AA person would not have been able to do what the OP suggests.
If it is as simple as needing a wire to energise the starter then I would suggest it is something inhibiting the starter from operating.
Before the actual starter motor can turn the engine it has to have the bendix gear engaged via the starter relay (mounted on the starter)
I think a bit more information as to what the AA was offering would be needed before any advice should be given.

Starter works if you ground it out? Sounds like the relay is kaput.

edit: eurajohn beat me to it.

Cheers

Sounds like your starter solenoid has failed.

Thanks everyone Starter motor working it seems just no power to it via the normal route. AA have set up the “hot wire” system to get me home. I just have to open the bonnet and touch the wire they fitted to the starter to the positive in the engine bay. Will see what the garage say when I take it in next week. Thanks again for your ideas. £1700 for a four year service cambelt etc last week but that is another thread and I know I might have done that cheaper. Oh and £600 for new rear springs a few weeks ago. Expensive this motorhoming lark but still fun!

If the starter works with a temporary fly lead touched to the battery it ain't the starter....it's a wiring/ign switch problem, most likely the ign switch .

Comfortmatic, are the brake lights working? Many sensors involved as well as the brake light switch.

Thanks pappajohn and DP+JAY. I think that I had better check with Vanbitz before I take it into Fiat if it is the ignition. The AA guy needed some convincing that it wasn't the added Vanbitz immobiliser at first and I guess that Fiat will do anything to try and avoid a warranty claim. Thanks for the advice on the Comfortmatic. I will check the brake lights tomorrow before I start phoning everyone.

Rac diagnosed starter motor on my sisters car but it was a break in the harness cable that caused the problem.

Presumably tapping a positive to the starter solenoid is kicking the starter into life. There’s nothing wrong with the starter or solenoid. It’s a wiring or sensor issue. Old school AA guy?

Starter inhibitor switch on auto or as you say poss immobiliser if you've had an alarm fitted

As others have said patch wire to starter solanoid kicks it in.
Starter fine.
So somewhere inbitween
Good luck
