We have been using the Portsmouth to Santander/Bilbao for the last 10 years , our van is 6.9m so we tick the 7m box then it asks if we have a bike rack so we tick yes . This year the clerk manually measured us at check in and said we were 7.5m with the bike rack what’s the point then of asking if we have a bike rack are we paying twice , it cost us an extra 25 pounds

Your van looks a lot longer than 7.5m;)

I would get onto customer relations, that is simply not correct!

Don’t know if it would do any good but an email to Brittany ferries would be my first step. We are 6.4 m and I tick the 6.5 m box and then the bike rack and have never had a problem. I agree that it sounds illogical, you might as well just tick 8m or me 7m otherwise. It does sound as though you’ve been charged twice.

Transcript of live chat this morning, I used my dimensions but the theory is the same.

Subject : If I book as a 6m motorhome with bike rack and pay the extra for the bike rack should i then be charged extra at the check in when measured if the total length including bike rack is then 6.5m

03/11/2018, 11:20:31 AM Brittany Ferries : Hello, a customer service agent will be with you shortly...
03/11/2018, 11:20:41 AM Sarah-Jane : Hello Alec
03/11/2018, 11:21:38 AM Sarah-Jane : When you make the booking you need to put the length of the motorhome and then select you are taking a bike rack
03/11/2018, 11:21:55 AM Sarah-Jane : as long as you do that correctly you will not be charged again at the port
03/11/2018, 11:23:08 AM AlecE : Someone that I know has apparently been charged an extra £25 after booking as you say and then measured at the port. What do you advise them to do?
03/11/2018, 11:23:37 AM Sarah-Jane : they would have only been charged if the booking had not been booked correctly
03/11/2018, 11:24:35 AM AlecE : That does not seem to be the case but I shall check and ask them to contact you direct.
03/11/2018, 11:25:39 AM Sarah-Jane : They will need to contact us. I work at check in and customers are only charged as I said if the vehicle has not been booked correctly
03/11/2018, 11:25:58 AM AlecE : OK thank you
03/11/2018, 11:26:42 AM Sarah-Jane : you're welcome, so as long as you put the correct length of the bike rack and select bike rack separately you will not get charged
03/11/2018, 11:27:08 AM Sarah-Jane : sorry first part should say correct length of motorhome
03/11/2018, 11:27:24 AM Sarah-Jane : Thank you for contacting Brittany Ferries

Sounds like you booked correctly by puting van length, then ticking bike rack question. So you should get a £25 refund on your doorstep soon:)

I used to work for a ferry company. The length is the overall length of the vehicle, including bike racks, ladders, boxes etc. as presented at the port. Same with the height.

So,

See the quotes.

Sorry,

got a mixed up reply there.

So, if your motorhome is 6m long and you book it as 6m plus a 1m bike rack (7m in total). cost is £336.50
Book the same motorhome as 7m including the bike rack, its £357.50.

Simple!

Maybe ferry companies have different rules and maybe even the company you worked for have changed the rules. Ryanair seems to change every few months and their rules are different from easyJet, Norwegian, Wizzair.

interesting.. but do they use 1mt as the bike carrier length ?

rack widths vary, between 40cm and about 68cm
my 3 bike rack was only 60cm ..

can you try the two quotes again allowing 0.5 mt for a rack .
ie.
6mt van with bike carrier
and
6.5mt van

I did those 1/2m quotes. But thought it best to do a 1m quote as an outside.

This thread is very interesting - just looking at a quote for the end of March, but keep getting the message that there is a problem with my request & I will have to ring up to get a quote - I wonder if it's because I need a pet friendly cabin? Does anyone have a loyalty code they'd be willing to share please? :)

We didn't have a tick box for bike racks, we only wanted overall length and height. It does matter, or it did to the passenger that destroyed two bikes on his roof when he drove under a height barrier. Or the guy that booked a Transit as a car and we couldn't get him on. I could go on and on. Be honest, declare overall length and height, you'll have fewer problems that way.

We are thinking of going with the idea of the longer crossing. Whats the drill for ablution for dogs please? Not sure our mut will be keen on peeing/pooing on a steel deck, she likes long grass.
