Nine years in theory, a newby in practice!!!
I just discovered today that the early May Bank Holiday next year is not on Monday 4th May but is on FRIDAY 8th May. Apparently the change to Friday is due to 75th VE Day anniversary celebrations.
Can't remember such a thing happening before .

I wonder how many of todays youngsters know what VE Day is.
I can remember a few years back youngsters being asked why we have 'Poppy Day'.
Several didn't know and one even thought it was something to do with the Labour Party :whistle2:

From January, I become a TWAT
(Tuesday, Wednesday And Thursday only) so this should not affect me, but it will cause some confusion Im sure

That is interesting. I live in Sherborne, a small town with 4 public schools. Because the early may bank holiday is "Labour Day" they are all open for business. I wonder what will happen next year? Is it too early to phone a friend on a Sunday, yes I think it is but I want to know, interesting.

Whilst I agree it is even more important in todays climate of ignorance to remember V-E day. I find it typical of the "establishment" that they cannot give the extra day for such an important and special purpose. Another reason IMV that any respect for the political establishment is in such a steep decline!.

It is an extra day - the May bank holiday has just been moved to the end of the same week! As far as I know it is only for next year. I'm sure that's what I heard on our local radio a couple of months ago.

Picked this up from .gov

When they had an additional day for the jubilee, my boss said the company could not afford it, it costs companies a lot, a day's trading lost and all employees still get paid. In the end the firm closed for the day but we all had to take a day's holiday. Whilst we would have liked to have been paid we understood the situation and nobody complained.

Was sure they'd said on our local radio that VE Day was in addition to the early May bank holiday. Obviously wasn't listening properly but then I rarely do when in the car or van!

the problem is not what the day is for it is the lack of notice....less than 12 months

people plan events many years into the future because they have to co-ordinate a venue,a weekend, traders, etc and would already have everything in place for the bank holiday weekend only to have the holiday day moved by the government so people wont be off and unable to attend.....its not like the government knew for years when VE day was going to be

it has affected weddings/events/holidays/flights that were booked for the friday as its now a bank holiday so costs rocket but they have already booked and paid non bank holiday rates....there are legal proceedings already ongoing

That's gonna p*ss off all the calendar makers etc who thought they'd get an early start on next year's stock of diaries etc and will now have warehouses full of 'wrong' ones!

Hope Jim hasn't already printed next year's Funster diary!

Another well thought out cock up by the powers that be
