Hi as the title can anyone recommend a sim for emergency use. I have a duel sim phone and often when away I fine poor/no service on my phone and I'm thinking of getting a second sim from a different network on pay as you go but don't want to pay a monthly charge. Any ideas please?

What network are you on now?

1p mobile. No contract, cheap and use EE network.

I think you need to top up every three months or so with a minimum of £10 to keep the sim active.

The best PAYG I had found a few months ago for other half was Asda Mobile where you put a tenner on it and as long as you made one chargeable call \ text every six months it didn't expire and no need to top up until credit ran out.

Not much use to OP right enough as they use Vodafone as their carrier!

I've got a similar option for O2 as my second sim but they discontinued that offer a year or two back. Still got nearly the tenner on it!

I wonder if I could get a sim but not activate it until I needed it? I also use the second sim option by buying a local sim when abroad

O2 Classic 123 sim requires £10 on set up then your credit rolls over. Need to make a paying call/sms once every six months to keep the sim active.

That's the one I've got and O2 discontinued it back in 2019.
Wonder if somebody ordered a load of their sims and are now selling them on?

O2 themselves don't sell this sim. But they sell them through resellers such as those on eBay.

John has EE on contract, 3 on PAYG andI am on Tesco/O2 although think that has been taken over. Have only ever had 2 places where the Tesco had signal and no one else did, grandsons were on vodaphone and something else not sure what.

I have a GiffGaff sim in the MH router. It's PAYG, and you buy a 'GoodyBag' which lasts for 30 days then expires. You can wait as long as you want before buying another GoodyBag, so it's useful if you only use it while away in the MH. The GoodyBags vary from 500MB to unlimited (in UK) data. They also allow phone calls and texts, but I only use it in the mifi so haven't used the phone option. It's on the O2 network.

1p mobile now have a fair use charge of £3.50 per month
Can you point me to where the is on the 1pmobile site as I can't find it.

I have a couple of giffgaff sims in vehicle trackers and only put £20 on each a year or so ago. I only use SMS to activate/deactivate the trackers, (although they are fully functional for calls etc. if needed), so they have both only used a quid or two in that time and are still valid and continuing to function. There is no need to buy any of the monthly ‘goodybags’ that they offer to keep the sims going - current PAYG rates apply to usage - so it sounds an ideal solution for a ‘standby’ second sim in a mobile phone.

I also monitor usage of them and another giffgaff sim via the app, so it’s very easy to keep track of how much credit remains.

1pMobile minimum usage

Hi Lee

Your monthly usage for the last 30-day period on your 1pMobile account was below the minimum spend requirement of £2.50, and therefore shortfall of £1.21 has been deducted from your credit balance; your remaining credit is £48.24.

If your phone loses signal from your primary provider, it should be capable of making 999 / 112 calls on any other network it can see, which is handy, but should the Emergency service wish to call you back, in those circumstances they can't.

I've just found this company via Google - on the face of it, it looks like what you're after - but I'd look for small print re the longevity of the purchased airtime.
