I'm a newbie
Hi all - as complete beginner with a new motorhome (arriving in a couple of weeks), I have a load of questions and my head is now spinning after reading numerous websites, forums etc. So if anyone could help me understand the essentials at this early stage, I’d really appreciate it 😊

Key questions:
- insurance: any recommendations? I have a quote from caravan guard that seems reasonable (full UK and European cover inc breakdown).

- security (unfortunately Vanbitz is not possible as I can’t get to Taunton). So far Phantom has been recommended, but there are lots of different options. Is it really necessary to have the “full monty” of alarm, immobiliser, and tracker? Surely as my van is a new 2022 model, it should already have an alarm and immobiliser in the vehicle as standard?

- additional security: is it a good idea to get a steering wheel lock, vehicle wheel lock, extra door locks, window locks?

- sat nav for motorhomes: garmin camper (either 780 or 1090) seem to get good reviews, but do they work in practice for UK and Europe?

- aires, campsites etc: recommended websites, apps or books to find these whilst travelling?

Any advice, recommendations, top tips etc would be very welcome 😊

Visible security, steering wheel lock and clutch/brake lock.

Clutch claw, also secure cab doors by threading seat belts through grab handles and plugging in. Secure hab door with something through grab handle all good whilst sleeping at night in strange aire.

Your insurance company might state what their minimum requirements are depending on value, might be worth speaking to a few before deciding what system and options to go for.

security will depend on which van you have you can add it to your profile makes it easier for others to help mwith any questions

Hi - I have a Chausson 720 on a Ford base.

Many thanks all for the above advice, other suggestions much appreciated 😊

Regretably the Ford Transit base vehicles seem to be more of a target for thieves than the Fiat and this will reflect in the insurance who almost certainly will want to see the "full monty" as you call it. Also need to take into account where you are going to store it when not in use. Best advice is before you take delivery get as many quotes as you can together with their requirements. Nothing wrong with Caravan Guard, we used them initially, only changing when they wouldn't , rather were reluctant to, cover us for higher than average mileage. You're paying out a lot of money so please get this sorted asap and don't collect your van until it is.

I agree that, once you've taken delivery, as much visible security as you are happy with may help to put off the scroats.

Other tips? Don't buy anything else until you've had at least a few days away and begin to find out what you actually NEED! Just raid your kitchen for basics.
I've just started clearing out my garage at home and shortly will be posting on the Classifieds some items that we thought we'd need but have hardly ever used - and I'm not alone in this!

Are you sure you couldn't get the van to Taunton? Vanbitz would sort out all your security worries and at a discount if you are a member on here. Factory fit alarm and immobilisers are easily circumnavigated by all accounts. I have no connection with the firm other than a satisfied customer but at least ask their advice.

Good luck and enjoy the van when it arrives
