Always learning.
Hello all, now that we can see a summer coming,I’ve decided to get a bbq for the MH, there is only 2 of us, so something small. I was thinking of a Cadac,, that aside, coz I’ve never had one,,how long would the gas pipe need to be from the bbq outlet on the van to the bbq? Don’t want to burn the old girl down or cause damage but still be an effective bit of kit,,all advice will be lovingly taken,,,cheers

I believe the max length of the pipe should be 2m .

My gas pipe is about 2.5 - 3 meters although cadac state officially it should be shorter (1.5m I think)

I use mine about 1.5m away minimum but never had an issue with the longer pipe and like the flexibility of being able to be further away.

I think my hose is 2m. That has always worked for us as our Cadac Safari Chef is pretty well shielded and 500mm from the van side has no warming effect on the van wall. If you steer clear of cheap sausages and burgers which spray gallons of fat everywhere you'll be OK.

I assume as you will be using the gas/regulator from your MH which is likely to be propane it either will be fine but couldn’t say for sure. Ours is the bigger Grillo Gas Cadac.

I recommend the portable Asda one that normally starts getting stocked around now. It's a good size, cuboid shape for efficient storage, usually on for £45, is light and can run off a regulated supply such as a BBQ outlet (many more expensive brands have built in regulators and can only run directly connected to a full pressure unregulated bottle).

Update:
It's currently on for £30. Bargain!

I run our cadac with a gas pipe of about 6 meters (also have a 1.5 meter for close cookin)but saying that it’s unplugged once I’ve finished cooking
it allows me to move around if I need to get out of the wind

Fwiw I did a "hack" using lava rocks on our cadac to make it more of a bbq rather than a grill, and to make cleaning it easier. It still works a treat and we now rarely have to clean the bottom bowl which used to get clagged up with grease. Leaving it on full chat for a couple of minutes vaporises any left over fat on the rocks and carbonises anything on the grid. I just let the rocks cool down overnight and put them in an old plastic tub when we're done. As always though be careful with gas, leave a decent space around the burner, and you don't know what you're doing then get someone who does to do it. https://www.motorhomefun.co.uk/forum/threads/cadac-lava-rocks.206724/

Got excited about sharing my BBQ feedback (here)
But between the title and the message content it became a discussion about cooking outdoors 😂
I guess by the time I’ve got a enough charcoal to last the trip I’m using as much space as a gas food heater 🤔🤪

We have a small Cadac that sits on the table outside, it's perfect for two people. We decided to use the small cans of gas with it, so we can put it wherever we want. It works very well.

Although we have a Cadac, we also have a proper BBQ that uses charcoal. I like the Cadac but it really isn't a BBQ. If I want to cook decent meat, then we use the charcoal BBQ. Sometimes, I cook a whole fish on the BBQ.

Our gas hose is 2.5 M long as we like to use the Cadac away from the van and never had an issue while using it, one thing I always do after disconnecting the hose is leave it hanging over my bike rack outside for a few hours before packing away just in case any gas is left in, probably not necessary I'm just an over-cautious person.

8mm. Check it is recent when bought. Better to buy off an eBay seller with a good score where the stock is regularly turned over than buying an expensive piece in a bag at the back of a caravan shop that might have been sitting there for 5 years. Make sure it is high pressure. Whilst low pressure hose is technically permitted, it isn't any cheaper, so just go for high pressure anyway. Don't use any old jubilee clips. They pinch and aren't up to spec. Clips need to be rated for gas hose use. They are subtlely different to avoid pinching the hose when tightened. Crimp type are more secure than worm drive, but you'll need some pincers.
