Thinking about getting a bigger battery, seen one that I like the look of especially the twin terminal layout... but. This one is a Lucas item.

This one is a Numax item, both clearly the same.. How Come?

Relabeling batteries is very common most of the so called leisure batteries are relabeled starter batteries.
Lucas market that one as a dual purpose battery Numax call it a leisure battery.
I wouldn't go near either of them if you are after a good quality leisure battery.

Yuasa apparently supply Halfords with the same batteries as their own but they are relabelled as Halfords own brand.

Both need no maintenance at all.

Any experts confirm or rebute this ?

This is another I was looking at..

Any views on this?

Im currently using a couple of the numax ones. Cheap and cheerful, they seem ok for the money.

Sticker specials - Lucas probably don't make batteries, but my pair of Numax have been good for over four years. What's the price difference?

Back in the 80's / 90's lucas parts used to be well made and reliable. I have no idea what happened (I think they sold out to china dot com) their automotive parts are TERRIBLE. So I wouldn't trust a Lucas battery, as far as I could throw it, which isn't very far really as they are b*stard heavy :D

The Numax one is about £9 cheaper at £92

It will make a good lead weight.
I wouldn't go near an AGM for leisure use even if you can charge it correctly.
What would you recommend Lenny? (or anyone).
It's a minefield..
Didn't realize that was an AGM, I'd prefer a wet battery.

Still a starter battery even if the label says leisure battery.
But there are some starter/dual purpose that work well for leisure use the Varta LDF range for example.

You aught to be looking at EFB type batteries if you are not going the expense to fit Lithium..
I would say this would be your best bet and something I would fit happily.

We are running quite a few Lucas battery's on the vans and tractors, not had one go wrong yet in a couple of years, but on the selling out of names, a lot of stuff iv noticed in cheap shops in France have got Dunlop on them.

Have a look at this LesW ...??

I fitted a couple of Yuasa L36-EFB a few weeks ago when my six year old Banners wanted replacing.

I got them for a decent discount at a Local Motor Factors where a couple of my nephews work and the batteries seem to be fine - been away over two weeks - only been on hookup once and they seem to cope well enough.

Starter battery is a Yuasa as well and after about a year of use is fine.

weve got the Varta LDF s one came with the van and we added a second 3years in with no problems

The twin terminal batteries are designed for caravans where the smaller terminals are used for direct connections for motor movers. No a lot of point on a motorhome unless you are thinking of adding a motor mover.

I'm preparing to duck but could someone remind me why AGM batteries are the devils snot? Over three Van's I have had pairs of AGM's of different makes perform faultlessly, off hook-up for days on end. On solar input on the present and previous van.?

Have you actually done a controlled discharge on the to check their capacity after a year or two's use?
The ones in my last van were giving 10a/h & 11a/h after 18 months

Many thanks for all the input, I think I'll go for an Excide ET650, very good specification and a good price.

Found someone selling them for £135 inc. postage.

Once again thank you all very much.

the double post sticker specials are also sold by alpha batteries cheaper with 4 year warranty. have fitted them to several vans and they all lasted well. very heavy is a good sign with wet lead acid batteries as plenty of lead inside

Sorry, what does this mean?
IT means Depth of discharge. In essence, leisure battery life is measured by the amount of times it can be safely discharged and then recharged. Lead Acid batteries should not be discharged more than 50 % because it starts to degrade the battery and Ideally, a lead acid battery should not be discharged more than 20% to get the maximum performance/life from it. Battery manufactures often quote the life of batteries by the industry acceptable term of the number of cycles at a given discharge rate. So, 350 cycles at 50% D.O.D means this battery can be safety discharged by 50% and then fully recharged 350 times before it is dead. Sadly, the leisure battery industry is rotten to the core and many manufacturers make false claims about their so called Leisure Batteries because A, The majority are made in China then shipped over here and different performance and brand names are applied to the same battery and B, there is no national or international standard laid down as to what a Leisure battery is and the criteria it should meet. There is such a standard for a starter battery which performs differently from a leisure battery and many are sold as leisure batteries only to fail a little further down the road with no comeback for the poor sod who was conned into buying it as a leisure battery. I hope this makes sense, it's a complicated technical issue and has been done to death by various Motorhome Fun experts.

So do we change the saying ”dead as a dodo” to “dead as an AGM”⚰

When we last bought a car battery from a Bristol wholesaler, their warehouse was full of unlabelled batteries and a lorry was unloading more, all unlabelled.
The guy went back and brought out a suitable battery for us and then stuck labels on !

I went to buy a Mini last week - the Salesman stuck a 'Rolls Royce' label on it and it cost me a fortune ........
