When getting bedding out from under bench seat to settle down for the night we noticed that the leisure batteries were a lot warmer than usual (warm not hot) and a couple of minutes later the CO alarm started going off. 2 wet Banner batteries, topped up earlier this year but not checked levels recently, on EHU on site. Batteries linked up to solar panels. We have disconnected everything for overnight. Have we done the right thing and what do we need to do to be able to get sorted tomorrow, is it worth just topping batteries up and reconnecting or will we need to try and get local assistance, in Hawes in Yorkshire and meant to be away for the week.

It is likely that the CO alarm being triggered was hydrogen / hydrogen sulphide gas being emitted by your leisure batteries which is most definitely not a good sign!
Disconnect both batteries from any charging source, open windows and doors to clear any "gas", then, when batteries are cool, disconnect them.
Batteries need to be tested. May be damaged from running dry? Personally if a lead acid leisure battery is over 3 years old I'd replace

Thanks very much guys, all a bit panicky when it’s dark and alarms going off. Ended up disconnecting and not noticing we’d tripped the main breaker also so didn’t have any power at all! Calmer in the light of day and breaker now back on, on campsites all week with EHU so will get battery sorted once home. Responses much appreciated. (y)
