Banks not helpful for Motorhomers

My RBS card was stopped when we were in Eire because I hadn't told them I was going ...... not a big problem as I had other cards / cash. Nice they were looking out for me :)

As a matter of little interest, I would hardly dream of using my Lloyds card outside of the UK, for the reasons stated by others but as my main banking is with them, I wanted to have a fall-back card for emergencies. I have followed Martin Lewis advice and obtained a Barclays Travel card with zero charges if paid in full inside a month, which ironically we have asked Lloyds to do for us.
A while back our Lloyds card was blocked in Sri Lanka when we literally ran out of cash to pay for a phone call to the bank. Two local people walking down the street saw our distress and lent me their mobile to call the UK. When the money on their phone ran out, they quickly got their phone topped up so that we could continue with our phone call to Lloyds in the UK. They were both low paid hotel workers which says something about charity.

Only time I've had an issue going abroad was the USA, put my card into an ATM and tried to get some cash. This triggered some kind of fraud alert and my card go blocked. A quick call to Nationwide, and they said it would be clear in the morning UK time, which meant I couldn't honour my round! Happy days! :D
Apparently when travelling outside the EU the banks require notification, I know that now!

when I first started spending time in the middle east I popped into my local Lloyds to let them know I will be using my card there, Guy behind the counter told me they no longer have the ability to add the info to my account and not to worry as there shouldn't be any problems using my card there anyway. Upon landing in Qatar went to pay for my visa and the card declined! phoned Lloyds and was told the fraud department would call me back. It took 4 hours.

I've now switched to Metro Bank, every time I'm going abroad I inform them by text and have not had any problems at all, they also don't charge any fees for using their cards in Europe. I've since moved my savings and business accounts to Metro as there service is so good.

I use my Lloyds debit and credit card anywhere I am in the world in either cash points or hire car or hotels and shops. Never been charged a ridiculous amount for fees or a exchange rate.....

Same as me, I only have Lloyds accounts.
Have only had a phone call once from them in 20 odd years when I made a larger than normal purchase when in Florida.

Our first lengthy trip using a Lloyds debit card for ATM and purchases was very expensive. When we got home we were horrified at the non sterling transaction fees as well as the rate loading. Over three months it cost us nearly £350 on fees.

I doubt they have scrapped these extortionate charges but you do need to look to find them.

Happily now with carefully managed Halifax clarity it cost us nothing in fees. Strange since it's the same company but such is life. Lloyds obviously rely on people not being bothering to check.

I agree with you about Metro bank, my son has started banking with them, he is impressed with the business facility...they are growing fast down here I think we are getting one in Watford soon..(y)

I now use my Revolut card everywhere without any problems, even use it in the uk as it's so versatile...(y)

They are modern banking, I opened my business account with them on a bank holiday Monday (no appointment needed) I was there 45 mins and left with my debit card in my hand. They are open until 8pm every day and whenever I go on holiday I'm able to put my watch collection into there safety deposit boxes. By far the best bank around now

No branch north of Cambridge though so I will stick with RBS / Lloyds for the moment - if we were to go abroad I'd look for a no fee card. In Eire it was nearly all cash, and when we did pay by card we were always asked if we wanted to pay in sterling or euros.
