We have stayed overnight on a few occasions in the caravan parking area at Baie de Somme Services, on the A16 autoroute, just north of Abbeville.

It is a very pleasant spot, well away from the services block and filling station, and enjoys far-reaching rural views. Quiet, plenty of grass, picnic benches and all well looked after.

I know staying over on the autoroute is frowned on from a security perspective. But it is the only one we've ever used for overnighting - always felt safe and seen regular police and security patrols.

Anyway, we decided to call in today just for a picnic lunch stop. But, unfortunately, the area was cordoned off and closed!

Not sure if the closure is permanent or not? Or how long it has been closed?

Came as a bit of a surprise, as we've come to rely on it, being just an hour (60 miles) south of Calais.

Anybody else had difficulty staying in the caravan area (near the perimeter of service area)?

Never used it, always preferred Le Crotoy. The aire at the harbour.
Huge, easily 100 vans, so always space. Can be a bit muddy, but location makes up for that. March this year was (I think) 8 euros, plus a couple if you want to fill up with water.
But we love it, been there many times now, also really handy for a vet in nearby Rue.

We always use the aire just outside Bruge in Beernam or if coming from the west Neufchatel en Bray

If early evening over, we tend to stop at Le Crotoy, if late then CdE. Nice spot so a shame if lost. Perhaps part of the refurb they have been doing for the past year. Always extortionate fuel.

There's been work going on at the Aire de la Baie de le Somme for a year plus now. Possibly a temporary closure? Here's a direct link to the relevant page on the SANEF website:

So many much nicer places to stay than a motorway aire or shopping centre, especially since there are regular reports of motorhomes being broken into at the Baie de Somme
Le Crotoy when it’s dry, Quend, Fort Mahon, Nouvion ( free with boulangerie nearby) Embry, Montreuil sur Mer...... there are loads to choose from.

Yes, we stayed at Camping St Claire, Neufchatel-en- Bray last night. A very pleasant and convenient site. Chose the campsite over the aire - only 4 euro more at 16 euro - but the Aire looked good too. Has matured a lot since we last stayed.

All handy for motorway, Lidll and cheap fuel. Having said that, not as cheap as expected at 1.44 per litre! Hey ho...

Yes, I'd read about the break in there, so know there is a risk.

Shame, because it is just such a convenient and pleasant stop when en route north or south.

Does any one happen to have an update on the Baie De Somme and know whether it has reopened or not? I have a midnight tunnel in a few days time and useful for a couple of hours kip before pressing on.

No, everything else was open as normal, including the designated motorhome parking close to the main facilities.

enough to know i shouldnt touch things i know nothing about ....
We've stayed at Montreuil several times. The designated bays are usually full when we have arrived but never had an issue finding a space on the car park next to them. Best to avoid market day though we have been informed. If youre heading down past Bolougne, then if you avoid the toll road from Bolougne, there are a lot of small villages along your route and although not set up for motorhomes, a one night stand shouldnt be a problem so long as there are no signs stating otherwise.

Nice little privately owned aire at Embry. Stayed there several times. Lovely and quiet. Can be found to the North East of Montreuil.

we often overnighted here.

First trip back post covid, and today have found it still closed off - staff have no idea what is happening.

Overnighted up in a more central caravan bay, without any problem.

Another vote for the free aire at Nouvion as long as you don't need services, carrefour, boulangerie and bar/restaurant just a few meters away and quiet at night.

Made a mistake of taking the non-toll route back from le Mans MotoGP. The fuel at that Carrefour was the most expensive in the entire trip! The mistake was thinking Carrefour equalled supermarket prices for fuel. Not all obviously. :)
