Please be careful everyone who is thinking of using the Baie De Somme Aire to stop over as we were broken into last night and so was my mother’s motorhome. They didn’t tamper with the caravan behind my mum (think it may have been because they had dogs as we were all sat out last night?) Found my bag on the floor and all that is missing is £10 I think? Thank god I don’t really carry any cash! All is well though as no one was hurt. Just wanted to make people aware and stay safe.

Sorry to read about your bad experience, but pleased no one was hurt.

Sorry to read that. Do you know how they got in to the vans?

Sorry to hear about your break in..
I have stayed at Bai de somme many times. Summer and winter both on the lower "caravan" car park and up the top near the windmill.. Never had an issue... You think you are maybe a little safer on a toll rd.. HOWEVER if you look on google maps there is a small rd that can be accessed by anyone that goes around the outer edge of the services plus a worker entrance. So anyone could easily get to the overnight stay area.. Not used it for a while now, rather be on Cite Europe with plenty of people about..

We have also stayed at Baie de Somme quite frequently, in the caravan area.

Very sorry to hear about the break-in. :(

Sorry to hear of your break in but it's a motorway aire so bound to be dodgy.

Yes, I know lots stay there, but we are always warned against when there are loads of safer places close by.

Richard.

Really sorry about the break in and hope nothing more is missing, how did they get in? because if it can be fixed easy DO NOT report it to your insurers as they will attach a non claim incident onto your details and you cannot remove it. That means if you shop around for quotes when renewing your insurance you will have to declare it as it will come up and they may refuse you.
That said Never!! ever !! use motorway aire stop overs, crooks are waiting for you.

Not necessarily dodgy, the break in was most alarming (no pun intended), however, I'm sure many, like myself, have had many satisfactory stops there. Caution and prevention needed though, same as anywhere else

it always concerns me when people warn of a particular aire as if it is a thief magnet. truth is that there are thieves in every town, everywhere. be security conscious consider all such overnight stops as a threat. leave nothing like handbags or wallets in easy to access areas like the cab. and keep backup cash and cards separate and well hidden

But surely motorway Aires/service stations are more risky by their very nature.
All sorts of vehicles pulling in and out day and night, carrying all sorts of people.
On an Aire de Camping-Car it might be noticed if vehicles come in during the night and as most Aires are very quiet any noise might also be noticed. Not so on a motorway aire.
Easy pickings for the light fingered brigade and a quick and easy escape.

It must be worth a few extra km for a quieter and hopefully safer nights sleep.

Richard

That motorway aire is very quiet. We have not had problems there. Police came around frequently during our last two stays.

I am also wondering how they broke in and were you inside asleep, sitting outside or a couple of hundred meters away having a meal out?

Years ago the food here was very good and not expensive. Now it costs a bomb and we dont bother walking across to the services area.

Sorry it didn't work well for you.

Awful you got broken into, but that aire has a reputation for break ins, as well as many other Motorway Aires
Always best to use a proper Camping Car aire if you can.

Cathryn has just picked this up on facebook motorcaravanners club. It seems it happened overnight while occupants were sleeping.

It does seem to be the case that significantly more break-ins are reported when staying at autoroute services as opposed to Aires de Camping-Car off autoroutes.

I don’t even like stopping in m/way service areas. They seem to have a life of their own and attract all sorts, and the truck parking area stinks especially in this hot weather.

yes, I am aware as it's a regular problem that Jim did work on. the forum software is supposed to block it, but it still happens with identical time stamps

Years ago when we were using lots of server resources it would sometimes mean double posts. The problem being that the server being slow would not acknowledge your post so people would post again. It’s been a very long time since that has happened meanwhile it’s only you who double posts. Are you on a slow connection - only hit post once :)

virgin fibre and only hit post once, which is instantaneous, but sometimes double posts

We stayed on Baie De Somme aire on 5th July and someone tried to break into our MH at around 4am, didn't get in but damaged the hab door lock. He also tried the caravan in front of us. I looked out of the window and watched him run off.

Danger is linked to how easy it is for thieves. These are small thieves, a category of people who are not interested in getting high rewards for hard work, obviously. What they are looking for is the easy way out. How to quickly get a few bucks for the day.

So they will primarily target places that are not too far, easy to access, where there are many potential targets and once there they will look for the easiest targets.

So, not all the aires are equal on that regard, but aires are generally not as safe as really remote, isolated places more difficult to access and which would require to scout large areas to find single targets.

I have no plan to ever stop at an aire near a large city, that's for sure. I know many people have done it and had no problems, but it is a matter of probability. I think camp sites are safer for city tourism or even overnight stops near cities or in heavily populated areas.

Glad everyone was OK and look on the bright side at least you were not gassed and your 2 rolexes stolen :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

The last time I used that one (it`s near a wind-gen?) was 2003, outward to Spain in convoy with other R-V`s. I had the alarm on the R-V trigger, ( A right "screamer", devils wail I think it was) but to be fair we never did suss out exactly why. I later found a nice aire outside a Campsite not to far away, and we used that in and out bound until they closed it. Circa 2008.

I use motorway Aires when travelling, and have done for years, as did, I would bet thousands of motorhomes, cars, cars and caravans, motorcyclists, lorry and truck drivers, last night, as there will equally be thousands of people using them, the intended purpose tonight! It is what they are for.

As I have post on MHFun (there is no other forum is there) before, if everyone that stayed in a motorway Aire posted and said "I stayed in a perfectly nice motorway aire last night and nothing happened, MHFun's pages would be clogged with non event posts!

And some are absolutely great by the way!
