I do agree with fair pay but I think we are going to have to pay for it.

We use the tunnel too, but if the ferry price increases the tunnel price will go up as well.I’m not, we use the tunnel.
Why?We use the tunnel too, but if the ferry price increases the tunnel price will go up as well.
Opportunism and profiteering.Why?
Because they canWhy?
Not due to the wage rise. Perhaps it will mean that the tunnel is more competitive than at present when compared to the future ferry prices. It could mean the tunnel prices stay similar to what they are now and get more customers. We use the tunnel too, but if the ferry price increases the tunnel price will go up as well.
I suspect you're not as cynical as I amNot due to the wage rise. Perhaps it will mean that the tunnel is more competitive than at present when compared to the future ferry prices. It could mean the tunnel prices stay similar to what they are now and get more customers.
Spot on!Opportunism and profiteering.
Nothing is fair these daysSurely that's not fair
Ultimately 'we' foot the bills for everything; there's no other source of revenue.I do agree with fair pay but I think we are going to have to pay for it.
If that’s the case Mel, they won’t need to reinstate cheap frequent traveller tickets if they’re filling the space at premium ratesNot due to the wage rise. The staff from the third world are very happy to work for £4 an hour, it's probably 2 or 3 times what they can get at home, but that is a race to the bottom. I saw what happened in the building trade when the eastern Europeans came here, I was lucky that the gas engineers could not pass our exams so we had some protection, but that didn't stop 20 installers being "supervised" by a qualified engineer. Other trades were sometimes thrown off a site with no notice, because the new arrivals would work for less money. This race to low pay is not good for anyone and if I have to pay more for a ferry then I will.Ultimately 'we' foot the bills for everything; there's no other source of revenue.
I've not followed the story closely but it does strike me as strange that in spite of the 'paltry' wages offered they've apparently not had any trouble recruiting 800 new staff.
That’s only a few boat”s full from Calais. There will always be cheap labour available to multi-national companies.Ultimately 'we' foot the bills for everything; there's no other source of revenue.

I totally agree but we don't become a high skilled economy by paying low skilled people more!Even the minimum wage is not enough to live on, and that is before the cost of living increases we have had recently.
The UK has been a low wage economy for years but now we need to become a high skill and high pay country or we will lose out to cheaper economies, like when all the highly paid workers at Ford in Southampton lost it as the factory was moved to Turkey.
Get out with yer cassette throwers and awning poles lads, it's time for the The Funsters' Revolt........I was only saying to my OH today that we are returning to the style of the gentry living the high life and the peasantry barely able to survive. The only difference is that the "gentry" is now the fat cats/CEOs with inflated salaries/pensions topped up with mega bonuses.
I looked for this new haven crossing only yesterday. Really surprised how cheap it was. 20th August £73 each way on the 23:00 sailings. Huge saving compared to similar routes.Dover/Calais prices have gone up a lot over the last 2 or 3 years, used to be able to get a return with the Motorhome for £110 - £120 now it's £180 - over £200 at the cheaper times of the day. But over twenty years ago it would have been even more we have got used to very low prices.
Newhaven/Dieppe is approx the same price with the over 60 discount, it's 3 times the distance & employs French crews BUT it gets a big subsidy from Dieppe town council, without it the route would close.
Becoming a high skill economy will take many years which is why it may never happen. They (the idiot politicians) thought years ago that to become highly skilled everyone needed a university degree thay ended up with all the useless university courses that leave people almost unemployable.I totally agree but we don't become a high skilled economy by paying low skilled people more!
The question is if we do pay higher wages and it increases prices then are the higher wages then high enough!. Also if low skilled jobs are paid more would you as a gas engineer have been happy when they were on the same pay as your without any qualifications in which case if you wanted the same differential costs would be even higher.
