Apple Airtag in your Motorhome?

Looks good to me and a battery life of over a year which can be replaced.
We currently have a tracker and I guess we get some sort of discount from our insurers but not sure if the saving is worth it?

I might buy one and ditch the tracker. I'll investigate further.
Thanks for posting.

They work by bluetooth I think and and signals to any iphone in reach. Most stolen MHs that are found by trackers have been parked up in quiet locations while thieves wait to see if a tracker on board. Unlikely then that a member of the public with an iphone would pass by but of course the thieves are likely to have them 🤣 so I suppose last location a possibility. ?

You got there before me! What's the betting that the thief would have an android phone.

Yes but would that not be a deterant in itself the fact that they would be able to see that it had a tracking device on board?

They would still have to find it??

Not sure I would have to do a little more research.....
Maybe invest in a muffler!!😁

If there is not an iPhone or iOS device in range of an airtag, then the airtags make a beeping noise when they detect movement, so as soon as the MH moves it will give the game away.
I’ve put one in my PVC (in addition to the existing tracker) purely as a cheap second system (albeit probably flawed one) and I removed the speaker before doing so which stops it from beeping.
Quite easy to do but will need a bit of glue to put the tag back together if you aren’t very careful.

Not too good in a motorhome because they will beep if they move without your phone being nearby

Jim, only a 5 minute job to remove the speaker to stop the beeps. Obviously voids any warranty on the tag but needs no electrical skills to do.
Once you open the case the actual speaker pops out with just a small screwdriver and there are no actual electrical contacts to remove or undo.

Cheers, I might try that and put one on my dogs collar. (y)

I'm going to get one and give it a go. Thanks for the info

There is currently an article on AirTags on BBC News Tech page

I have just had a dabble and removed the speaker from one of my airtags.

To remove the speaker, first, remove the chrome cover and battery, then get a fingernail between the white casing and the grey rubber seal and prise the two apart enough to get a small flat screwdriver in the gap and gently work your way around the edge until the inner pops away from the white outer case.
The speaker is stuck on the back of the inner molding and just pulls off.
Clip it all back together minus the speaker and job done.

I use one in my van hidden away, I did take the speaker out (YouTube was my friend) it works well and updates its location so long as someone with another apple device goes near the van, there lies its biggest flaw but there are so many Apple devices about sooner or later it will update. I use it in conjunction with a Sargent tracker. It's an ok backup IMHO.the one i saw

Remove speaker with zero damage, without breaking the tabs no glue needed

And that is what the scrotes who are stalking will have done too.

Surely the way to make this stalker resistant is to require the airtag to be linked to an apple account and in the apple software note the I'd of any phone tracking the position. If as in the cases highlighted the police ask apple should provide information on who's been tracking the device. Unless I've totally misunderstood how they work.

This type of device has been about for years, Tile and others. The press are only jumping on it because its an Apple product.
Totally it's a pet hobby of the BBC they love to have a go at apple but never bother to tell the whole story.
At least Apple have tried to do something about it. Tile are looking to do something about it but only now since Apple acted on it. They've quality forgotten about it for years.

What about hiding an old phone in the Motorhome and using a find my phone app

Or use a samsung tag. They don't beep when away from phone

Its 60db, so if you buried it well away no one would be likely to hear it?

I see that Amazon are selling 4 x AirTags for £79.99 instead of £99 at the moment……
