The point is the other mans grass is always greener if you think an occupation is well paid and cushy do it yourself or get your kids to do it and stop whingeing!!! If you do a job where the pay is low and someone is making a profit out of you become self employed! If someone does a hard apprenticeship on low pay and their friends earn more as labourers on motorways if you feel hard done to go and do that as well!

So I should have gone on the shovel because the money was better ? How short sighted is that ? I after 7 years in the trade set up my own successful business and employed many very good people over the years.. I think pushing a Spear and Jackson may have been a bad move .
No longer is it fair to assume if it ever was that the self employed earn more .... most have been forced into self employment due to Tory policies and earn nothing like they should.

The £80 is for all the overheads a main dealer has to pay and employs 20/30 people maybe more, my local mechanic pays nothing like that yet still charges £40/50 and employs far less
The solicitors 6 mins cost you about £15/20, nothing against that just pointing it out
You use your local and if the difference is only £30 then I will use the main dealer if not I will also use my local mechanic
Don't get this bullshit argument about who does what training and how many years it takes, a solider, fireman, police all put there lives on the line but get silimiar to a mechanic but no way near a brief or for that matter a footballer

The £60 an hour I was charging for engineers not mechanics also included ful overheads, my point really is the overheads at a main dealer are very excessive, and one suspects that workshop time is subsidising some other part of the business. In general my experience is that good independent service stations provide far better value for money than main dealers who in no way guarantee good service (a main dealer wrecked my gearbox once, fortunately for me a contract hire car)

I used a Formula 1 garage a couple of weeks ago for a service, never again!! They were absolutely clueless and the 2 mechanics working on my car had to keep calling the manager who was clearly the only trained mechanic on the premises. Avoid at all costs even worse than Kwikfit if yo ask my opinion.

Kwikfit are ok ( and i mean just ok) at tyres and exhausts and nothing else.I had to take my company car there because the firm had a contract with them and I hated every minute.My son thought he could save money going to Halfords for an electrical problem and they blew the main 50amp fuse on his heap of shit! I complained and got compensation.Anyone remember Nationwide service centres!?.. they serviced my car and left one of the wheel nuts in the hub cap!..compensation again.No,if you dont want to do it yourself and you dont have a trustworthy garage you are in an awkward position ,thing is sometimes saving money doesn't really save you money..and trust me you CAN get better than a kwikfit fitter..any day!

I'm not whingeing!. I recon most people work for what they earn. If they earn more than me they either trained longer than me were more intelligent have more responsibility or were just lucky I don't often feel hard done by. I do feel a bit put out by public sector pensions but its the luck of the way the interest rates have gone over the past few years.

I'm an optometrist.................here we go the usual money for old rope etc etc. Actually I know I was lucky passed the 11 plus went to grammar school first person ever in my dads family to go there or to university no tuition fees straight into a well paid job. That being said my mum and dad did without lots of times to get my brother and me through a good education my mum especially did extra work at home with me and my brother he had the same home help books as me I did them in pencil so he could use them later we were properly poor on free school meals. I come from Mansfield one of the poorest areas anywhere the threat was always you will have to do well or you will end up down the pit that idiot Scargill didn't know what he was talking about saying the miners wanted their sons to follow them down the pit (at least if your parents cared about you). The pensions thing is my biggest worry now as we were never in a company scheme being self employed for 25 years luckily we never really got used to spending a lot so have saved for years.

This is really off the thread so to get back to it....... quick fit don't do it. Find a local garage you can trust and see the same bloke every time like choosing a builder, dentist, bank manager (if you can find one) solicitor optometrist or whatever go for personal recommendation not dodgy deals.

You have done well very well and your parents are to be applauded. Trust me I came from a truly impoverished background also.

I remain confused on the pensions thing though. Are you talking about the state pension ?

Fiat specify this because it's supposed to do the two years/30000miles.
As I get mine done annually and do no where near that sort of mileage I'm happy with the right grade non synthetic or semi synthetic.

Right same here. The banks are nothing short of thieves ! Had a review of our accounts a week ago and listened to the jester they employ telling me it's down to the base rate. I invited him to look at the rate for credit cards on the wall in the room we were sat in..... 19.7% .... yer right....

I wasn't sure if your engine requires synthetic oil as specified (sounds like it may)???
If you are using semi or non synthetic in place of a specified synthetic then there are 3 issues that come to mind. Firstly synthetic/semi/mineral oils are often incompatible in terms of mixing together in an engine (unless a mega engine flush is done) secondly FIATS DPF system requires synthetic oil to operate correctly.
Thirdly FIAT would have the right to reject any engine related warranty claims on the basis of incorrect oil use.

Thanks everybody for the advice, I am going to the stealer as I don't have time to find an independent and the last one I tried knackered the sump threads. Qwikfits reputation on here is not reassuring. So stealer it is for genuine FIAT oil & parts. Thankfully I can do any interims myself on my own drive from September

I asked Kwikfit to for four new Michelin XC Camping tyres and took the van round when they rang to say the tyres had arrived. After fitting, I looked to see that they had fitted different, cheaper tyres but charged me for the Michelin XC Camping ones. When I asked, they said they had fitted alternative tyres because Michelin no longer produced XC Camping tyres! A telephone call to Michelin quickly established that they did indeed still produce XC Camping tyres.
I believe they had been deliberately dishonest.
