I have just returned from the USA staying with my son and his family in Connecticut.
About a year ago he acquired a Vespa 150 from a close friend which was kept unopened in a packing case since the Vietnam war. She is now old and downsizing, the lady not the Vespa.
I think it could be one of the best examples on the planet and has never even been registered from new In 1959, and It has 89 kilometres on the clock and in a totally original untouched condition apart from the brake and clutch cables, seized, and drum brake pad disintegrated with age. The engine was flushed through, new petrol and two stroke oil commissioned and it started virtually straight away. Here’s some pictures of this little beauty.
And amazingly there are five more examples still in there packages just like it. One of them, a blue and white one, could be coming to me very soon.

Was a Lamy man myself back in the 60s, that vespa is a stunner.
Thanks for bringing back memories.🤣🤣
Not been on a bike for 60 years but scary to think I could drive off on a 1200 cc Yam.
Don’t worry I’m not going to.☹️☹️

looks great.👍

Like BillyKontiki i was a Lambretta man n the 60’s.

Carlisle to Edinburgh every other weekend for three years, (young love), covered over 40k miles on it before it died following abuse when it was stolen and recovered.

it paid for its keep, married to the lady now for 53 years!

I had a Lambretta TV175 and never thought I'd say this but I'd happily swap it for that Vespa.

Is there as good a market in the USA for classic scooters as there is in Europe?

If it was mine I would use it. I wonder how you would register a 1959 unregistered vehicle in the U.K. ?
If and when mine arrives I guess I’ll find out.

Find someone who can validate the chassis year and you should be able to get the aged related reg number.
When I was restoring Yamaha RDs I belong to a forum that had a member who did the registration for imported bikes to get aged related reg.

We have a much more contemporary Vespa GTS 300 in the garage but that is a beauty, like it’s come through a time machine. Worth a few bob that I suspect, which may be reason enough to limit real world use now?

It’s probably worth a small fortune but in real terms nothing. The reason he has it is because she knows he would never sell it. Even the spare wheel has the original cellophane wrapper.

A lot easier than you may think and if it's still got the crate, easy to verify it's true history. Absolutely should be in a museum

I actually thought about that. I will get the Vespa experts to take a look at it before I even think of using it. It could be too precious.

I had a Lambretta in the '60's whilst serving in the RAF in Cyprus, I really wanted either a VW beetle (which was £450 NEW) OR Harley Davidson motorcycle (£460) NEW . . . In the end I bought the 150cc Lambretta - cost NEW £160 !
(and had it flown back to UK free on transport plane at the end of that posting

It's a scooter!!

Rare maybe but not 'a work of art'!

Nice looking scooter. I like all two wheeled transport. But have a soft spot for certain models. I wonder if you can guess which make.
Here are a few of mine:

You need to be careful when buying 'unrestored' scooters, especially if you're not used to the market. Many are remanufactured in Vietnam to look unrestored, or even unused. There are telltale signs like paint colour, wheel trims, brake drum backing plate covers, speedometers and chrome trims which were not available in the 50's and 60's. Engines can be deadly, with drinks cans used for things like oil seals and shims. Even great looking frames can hide horrendous welding.
