Annual Insurance Moan!

Well thought we had cracked it, I called the Whittlesey Branch and was connected to a lovely lady called Charlie. She took all my details and I was honest telling her I was told NFU were not interested with my size of engine. She explained that the underwriters appetite had changed recently and she would go through a quote. All went well and the system gave a premium of £1760 with £1000 excess. The system also had a note saying it required underwriter approval. Charlie called me at 9.30am asking clarification around where the van is stored, was it an approved storage facility which it is. All sounded positive and she said she would get back to me. Got a call an hour ago apologising that the underwriter refused to cover due to me having no other business with NFU, my request of 10k annual mileage, expected mileage for a vehicle of this value is expected in the region of 3k - 4K per annum and finally my home address is not rural enough for NFU. Oh well worth a try, funny thing is no mention of engine size like last year 😂😂😂
It really does feel like it depends on which side of bed the underwriter got out of today as to whether you are going to get a reasonable quote or not.

I got my ERS quote again today through another broker (their choice not mine) and instead of £5,700 its £7,000 this time. Could be because its Friday, or because its a bit cloudy, or they thought I would be happy to pay a bit more...who knows!

Check exactly what’s covered? Windscreen, breakdown cover, NCD protection…
Hi Janine being highly suspicious by nature I checked immediately I got the notice and again before I posted. As I said it's identical to last years. Its all covered with no change to the ex's.

Re my post #25 above I now have my renewal quote from NFU-M for the MH cover. Predictably it's gone up, in fact by 31.2342% 😠. Interestingly though I have just run through a quote with Comfort who came up with a figure £562 more than NFU-M. When I told the the lass she said "I'm not surprised. For high end vehicles NFU-M is often considerably cheaper than Comfort."

Well, the long awaited email arrived today, the annual Motorhome insurance renewal. I was filled with dread given only two companies seem interested in covering us and the claim for the windscreen early this year. I clicked the attachment and must say the bp was a little higher than normal as I waited for it to open. The first thing that caught my eye scanning through the renewal was the “claims” under the glass section it lists the cost of the new windscreen. I cannot believe the total cost registered. I was told it was £9k at the time but seems other charges may have been added with a total recorded cost of £11k for the windscreen. This filled me with dread and bp was even higher as I scrolled down. I kept reassuring myself that I should just be happy that they have agreed to renew.
Got to the bottom of the letter and what a shock, my premium has gone down by £49 compared to last year. Happy days and huge relief, more spending money for Thailand. I called asking about third party cover whilst we are away for 3 months but that is not an option.

Nice to see insurers doing what they are supposed to do for once. Get it paid quick before they change their minds...:LOL::LOL:

I recently relocated home and moved motorhome from one Cassoa gold storage facility to another Cassoa gold storage facility ( with better security ) but because of post code change my premium from Comfort has nearly doubled.
Surely ,if it’s secured storage, location shouldn’t matter ?

So my renewal came through and the premium with NFU is up by nearly 15% again after staying the same last year.

Another years no claims, still no convictions, vehicle a year older and not worth as much - but none of that seems to matter. It is a very limited market for high value vehicles so if they want to increase the price they do. It is simple supply and demand economics.

Rang round a couple of brokers that I know offer cover, and the ones that would quote confirmed I cannot get any better value. One broker even told me if I am paying 1.5%-2% of vehicle value I am doing well, and actually if I lived not too far West of where I do, the premium could be ten times as much!

Just have to accept it and pay up I suppose :(:(
Have you tried companies directly? I’ve swapped this year to Ripe not sure if claims run smoothly as never claimed but damn site cheaper than my renewal quote

My insurance has just gone up from £343 to £483 ( I am now 76 ) 20 plus years no claims 14 yrs with motor homes. .with Adrian Flux. phoned and they reduced it to £470 asked why it had gone up by so much didn't get much of an answer went went onto their web site filled it out as a new customer it was £30 cheaper still . I may be wrong but I thought there was no difference now for loyal customers over new customers. during a search around was shocked to find that Van Blitz was not on some of their lists of approved installers, they also quoted that alarms over 7 years old even working correctly didn't make any difference to premiums.I don't have an expensive van and we do about 7000 miles a year another quoted anything above 5000 miles year increases price I fully agree with all its a minefield out there rip off Brittan again to the fore.

Perhaps the better security is needed because of the location. NFU take no notice of CASSOA ratings just require a locked compound and cost is based on post code. They know no amount of security will stop a determined thief.

Have you tried caravan guard ? They were really competitive for mine 😊

As post #5...Ripe only cover vans up to 100K value unfortunately.

That is what we are told...but your experience seems to demonstrate otherwise.

Yes I tried them and they would offer cover, but had lots of policy conditions that were not practical to comply with, and were actually very slightly more expensive than NFU anyway.

I received my renewal quote from AIB today and it has gone up over 300% compared with last year’s premium!!! (Up from £413.67 to £1387.86). This is despite me reducing the value of the moho by £5k and the expected annual mileage by 1k. The reason I was given is that Aviva, who I’m currently insured with, are no longer selling their insurance through brokers and so AIB had to go out to other firms for quotes. Still a staggering increase which I struggle to see a justification for given I’ve had no claims or points in the previous year. The guy from AIB ended the call by saying that he fully understood if I decided not to renew given the price!!

Wow…as you say, a staggering increase that would make no sense at all to anybody other than the underwriter setting the premium (presumably it did to him)

Increases of that size feel quite unfair and make budgeting difficult, especially when there is no obvious reason for the change.

Time to get ringing around I guess. As a side point, AIB weren’t able to offer me a competitive premium either.

Sounds like it is not so much a renewal so much as a new quote from a completely different underwriter. Can you go direct to Aviva to see whether they will renew your policy directly?

That’s the plan. Hopefully by shopping around I can find something far closer to this year’s premium.

Adrian Flux have got back to me with a very competitive quote, £350 less than ERS underwritten by Axa only downside is it only allows a total of 93 European days per year 🙄 Current ERS allows unlimited European travel and trips up to 180 days. Looks like ERS are still the company to renew with. Interestingly, Axa don’t require details of glass claims so my windscreen claim was not factored into price.

Stewartwebr would you know if ERS cover Croatia not only 3rd party please?

Croatia doesn’t appear to be on the list of automatically included. Surprisingly, Bosnia is, but they do seem open to allowing other country use but I assume at a cost.

Cheers stewartwebr I’ll give them a call

My Insurance was with ERS they wanted an extra £300 this year. I went via Adrian flux with AXA. I have 270 European days under section C of my policy documents with AXA.

Is that 270 days per policy year, is there a limit to single trips?

You need to go through a Broker, they don’t deal direct. I deal with Buckingham Insurance who have been great.

We were with Comfort for the last few years. This year the premium had increased by 27%, no changes to anything.

I rang around and couldn’t get a substantially better deal, one company even admitting that they couldn’t match the premium and that “Comfory do a very good product “.

I contacted Ripe , via the MHF link, and found them to be £87 below comfort for a similar cover. Comfort were unable to match that.

My only concern is that I cannot find a telephone number for Ripe. I have e-mailed them, as I have a permanently sited caravan with them already, with a query. So far no reply.

I will report back next week when I see what transpires.
