An observation on newbies.

Newbies who use the "Introduce Yourself" category rarely tell us anything about themselves.

Yes and very often asking lots of questions then disappear into the ether.
Having never been a full member so presumably having no intention of putting something back in 🤷‍♂️

Seems a bit harsh. I seem to recall you could only post a few times before needing to sign up? Are not the questions and answers a contribution?

I have to agree with Silver Fox the Forum survives through its Members and the contributions they make I think its a bit much, get a solution to your problem and then vanishing and often without a thank you, surely they should consider hanging around and perhaps helping someone else with a question.

Not giving out too much personal information especially when new is a good idea, having been Catfisfished before when I joined in February I was slow to give any personal info (KiwiKampers, you already know this)

Surely some come on and ask questions, but then either don’t buy a MH or decide this place isn’t for them, others may not see the value.

Personally, I joined simply because I wanted lots of information and it didn’t seem fair to pick peoples brains endlessly without contributing (getting around the limited posts would be simply enough)

I guess it’s not a coincidence that as a non forum type (I’m only on 2, and have only looked at the other 1 a handful of times this year) I seem to have come here a lot during lockdown, and posts seem to have trailed off these past 2 weeks since lockdown eased.

We were all ‘newbies’ once!
I understand the complaint tho, someone has a problem/question/wants info so they ask Google which comes up with us-amongst others-so they have a look, that’s free, and decide to ask. If they’re lucky one of us will give them an answer, off they go quite happily with the info and never think to come back and say thanks or join up!
Maybe it’s up to us to cajole them into joining before just handing out the answers willy-nilly?
I also agree with not putting too much personal info onto any forum!

When I first joined I didn't pay up straight away. We were converting an ambulance at the time and just gleaned info and learnt about the wonderful world of motorhoming. When we sold the conversion and bought an old Hymer (We were well and truly hooked by then), I thought that's it, we can join now and go and meet all these folks I have been reading about.

Not everyone is confident enough to jump in straight away.

I can understand newbies being reluctant to give too much personal detail on this forum, or any other, but what’s the harm in, for example, letting us know what type of MH they have or want to have, where they hope to travel, who’s travelling with them, what hobbies they hope to pursue while holidaying, likes and dislikes, etc.
I suppose I liken it to making small talk when you meet someone for the first time. It helps to break the ice and open up the conversation. Who knows where it might lead?

Oh Dear. I'm a Newbie and must admit I did look around the site before joining. I looked at many and this looked like the best for what I was looking for. Friendly, helpful, with a bit of banter thrown in.
I am also guilty of not putting a lot of information on about myself or the wife.
While there are some that would just look for an answer and disappear I'd like to think that maybe they would at least say thank you.
Perhaps there could be a limit on how many times you can visit the site before you have to contribute or join.

Yes but some of us did our own research and did not rely on others to spoon-feed answers.

I think i was about 3 years motorhoming before I joined a MH orum.

Joined once we had selected our van, spent hours doing research of our own, then thought it would be a good idea to join........hope to take delivery of our van in September. (y)

I wonder how long it is before you stop being a Newbie? Maybe it’s not just time but number of postings or replies? Some people have been on here for ever..........

Many of the long standing members that have offered information over the years might be here now but they won’t be here forever lots have already left us,therefore,it’s the Newbies that we count on for continuity as they become the members of the future.
You only get out what you put in and you cannot expect to drop in pick up I information and trot off.
Personally l would restrict the viewing and commenting to 5 and then the fee is payable.

I understand the reluctance to put too much personal information on an Internet forum. It’s not wise.
But it doesn’t risk anything to say.....looking for a van......just bought a van........looking forward to meeting you....I am Fred and my wife is Freda...etc.

Personal Security is vital on tinternet. As to lurking, why not? When i first got my van there were 5 forums after my money @ £15 each. I tried 2 , kept using the bongo fury and other free bongo forum as being the most relevant and .the most "me".. with the rapido fun is now the most "me", though i did read hundreds of posts on other forums.

Why?

From
Debs somewhere in West Notts
Because people ask a question and if your sort of close you could go and help them. Often someone from Scotland will ask for information but if we don’t know what area they live how can we recommend a local dealer or tradesmen. I’m not saying put your address just Yorkshire Suffolk wales etc 👍🏼personally I don’t want to know the in’s and out’s of a cats arse. Or pictures of the family etc
