We bought an RV from two extremely nice Australians a few months ago which is stored in Los Angeles.
Today we are heading westbound for our first road trip in it. Arizona, California, beckons for the next 7 weeks. Looking forward to it immensely, will keep you posted.

Sounds a great idea. Have fun. That Winnebago looks similar to the one we had a couple of years ago.

Green with envy.:envy:

But we will follow your trip with interest.

Enjoy!(y)

I hope 7 weeks is long enough for you! Fabulous part of the world; I spent 5 months touring the western states of the USA in 2010 with a fifth wheel, and 6 weeks crossing from Rhode Island to California in 2009.... Ahhh, happy memories! I'm very envious for you.

7 weeks is a short trip for us. But there will be lots more all being well. Eventually it will end up with our son in Connecticut. That’s the plan anyway.

First thing I'd do is ditch that compass and get a new one. The next place west of Los Angeles is Japan:oops:

But in the right direction, there's the Grand Canyon, Meteor Crater, Painted Desert and Los Alamos. And maybe Roswell .

I mean the Wild West as in Tombstone for starters. Then all the places you mention. No particular plan, just wherever it suits.
Phil meboots.

If you are heading towards the Grand Canyon Williams is worth a stop for the Steam train to the Canyon Rim but still a lot of snow at this time of year once away from the valley floor. Enjoy the trip.

Since you mentioned Australians, I thought you might be making a mistake like I did once in South Africa. Following the map, we needed to take the path northwards. No problem, it's midday, turn my back to the sun, it's that way.

Who needs a compass? I had one in my pocket, just never took it out. Half an hour later, after half a dozen 'This map's all wrong's the penny dropped. The sun is in the NORTH when south of the equator.

What a fantastic idea Phil. I'm looking forward to reading your updates - lots of pics please (y)

Have a great time,

Andrew

We have always wanted to do a lengthy (up to 12 months) USA road trip and it was a real possibility until we looked into health insurance. The older we get the more difficult it gets to find insurance.

Good for you, lucky bar stewards. On a boring note, how did you work out the insurance?
I looked in to it and couldnt get past purchasing a yank whilst having a British licence. Could not find any one to insure me as they all stated I needed a US licence to buy an RV.

Another vote for meteor crater, it's awesome.
Also nearby is (if you are an eagles fan) the town of Winslow Arizona.
4 corner's is also in that neck of the woods but IIRC is about a 4 HR drive East.

Titan missile silo is a must as well.

As is Pima air museum near Phoenix

Everyone knows about the grand canyon, but how about the second largest canyon in the US, canyon De chelly and spider rock.

I got my insurance, Originally, Through "Good Sam. We bought our Winnebago (Avatar, that`s the Devils Tower in the background) in Florida, and did all the business there, and temporary "tags". Took it and a Rental car on a U Haul to Texas, where it was re-registered properly. "Good Sam" put my insurance with their insurers, still on my UK licence. I did get a Texan Licence subsequently. but that was the following year as it lowered my Premium (Approx $700pa) on a $25K Valuation, by about $200. We met many Brits out there who where only on UK licences?. It`s a question of shopping around. P.S. Mine was a private purchase BTW.

Over a 5 year period, we went out for up to 6 Months each year, We put 27 states and 20K miles on the Winne; Most of the places Ticked by posters above where or have been on our Bucket List. The road to the sun BTW is Awsome. But nothing bigger than a car is allowed, except Tourist Buses. The year we went, the road had not opened until July 4th, and there was still snow in Early August!. We used the Agar campground to stay in the forest, by lake Mc Donald and caught the bus to the top, there where Hundreds of Bikers all on their way to Sturges for the annual Biker weeks. 750,000 that year!.

Stopping places:- Walmart are good overnighters, Native American Casino`s, Even free EHU once!. Lots of BLM lands have campgounds, basic and cheap. KOA`s are Expensive, but often convenient for a particular Venue. Las Vegas, we used the Station (Casino) Campground in the OLD part of Vegas. a short walk to Freemont St and get the Bus to any where in Vegas on what was a $9 day pass.

Came to an end after SWMBO`s last Hospitalisation. The cost of Medical Insurance was by then far too high.

We used “progressive“ insurance, as did our predecessors, no problem at all. It cost around £700 inc roadside assistance.

If doing R66. Walnut Canyon not far from Flagstaff is worth a detour too. https://www.nps.gov/waca/index.htm They have dedicated R-V parking (or did). Same at Crater. And many other venues Including Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Monument, which when finished will be even larger!.

Better do the silo quickly before President Trump fills them up again! :)

Oh poop! Thanks guys and back to the drawing board it is. Was not aware of temporary tags.
The original idea was buy an RV but then after a few gins it was to buy a classic car Corvette/Mustang tour around and then ship it back. We then had more gin and the RV idea came back.
We have friends in Florida that could look at either for us.
Obviously we need to stay away from the gin.
Kev.

Been trying to explore buying in the USA for a six month trip as hire is too expensive. Couldn’t arrange insurance. so shipping our own van over but again although can insure it its $3500 ouch!!

Look at spending two or three days in Toombstone, 40 miles east of Tucson. It is worth going to and there are RV 2 campsites in the town. In Tucson, go to the place where all the old western movies were made plus the place where the USAF has over 2000 planes on standby. It takes over 30 minutes to go round the place in a guided tour bus. It will be an experience of a lifetime. Good luck.
