Had a phone call today, a female recorded voice with an American accent claiming to be from Amazon Prime telling me my account would be debited shortly with £39, press 1 to speak to a manager. I don't owe them anything but I didn't press 1. The number called was 01591 553107.

I enquired with Amazon and they say the call dod not originate from them and in any case they do not make calls to customers to advise of upcoming charges.

No doubt, had I pressed 1 I would have been connected to a helpful manager who could assist me further once I has passed security checks by giving my full name, postcode, date of birth, bank account number and sort code, mother maiden name etc.

So if you do get a call like this out of the blue........ignore it.

Once I hear a recorded voice with an odd accent (faux American, eastern etc), the phone goes down immediately. I do look at the incoming number, sometimes there are too many digits, or it doesn't follow UK numbering, and not pick up, though they do often phone again under another number. That's on the landline, I've never had such a call on my mobile.

It seems to be a fairly simple process to make a phone call appear to come from any number that the scammer wants, such as your banks phone number

Ditto for me as well. Don't be tempted to press any buttons as had already been mentioned it could connect you to a very expensive phone call.

I have had several of these in the last few months I just put the phone down

I think it’s time premium rate phone numbers were banned. They are just a cash cow for the telephone companies.
spongy

pressing 1 might have connected you to a premium rate number

This is the most likely outcome. Put the number on ignore without doing anything else.

I've got an Amazon prime account, and they don't ever phone me. Pickup codes are sent by email, and I can read those on my phone.

We have a call block system. Anyone who rings, is asked to give their name. We are then advised, and can accept or dump also logging the number to Barred Calls. ONLY numbers that have been allowed can get through.

I remember years ago used to hear on the radio 'Call Whitehall 1212'

Had 3 of those calls in the last couple of weeks.

We're still getting up to 3 a day from them. We keep going into our B T account and blocking the number, which works for a few days, then they ring on a different number.

But my understanding is if you press 1 you are connected to a premium rate number

After several calls, which I knew must be scams because I don't have an Amazon Prime account, I decided to press1. No premium rate has been charged to my phone.

Gordon

The conversation went:
ME "Who am I?"
HIM "I'm the manager from Amazon Prime"
ME "Yes, but who am I?"
HIM "I'm the manager from Amazon Prime"
ME "You have rung me to tell me that there is a problem with account. Who am I?"
HIM "You are a person"
ME "What is my name?"
HIM "You are a person. You are a human being."
ME "You are an a@@hole. Get a life and do a proper job."
He then rang off.

What I have found when buying from Amazon is they offer this prime thing for next day delivery that I never accept and invariably the stuff turns up next day anyway.

Also, the press number 1 scam number thingy appears on information about my credit card payments and an accident claim I have never had. This is on my land line that is an unlisted number. I also have a premium rate message appear on the mobile that the verminous cooks charge me £3.47 for every month and o2 are unable to stop it without my changing my mobile number. The world is infested with crooks. I was pick pocketed last year in Spain and had my rucksack and bike stolen in two incidents in Sweden.

Just bringing this up again as I've had 2 phone calls recently supposedly from Amazon, I hung up and reported the number to them.
