alde heating on 1Kw not doing much

not sure if the simple answer is, 'it is too cold outside'

we are on an aire in France with free electricity but 10A limit

we have set Alde to level 1 electric only which I think means 1Kw, turned off the gas option

temp has dropped from 26C inside in the sun at 17:00 to 17C now, but it is -3.5C outside

Is the heating not working or am I being too optimistic ?

Have now turned gas option back on to see what happens, electric only was fine at New Year but set on 3 then but without gas then

edit - have also done some maths and set heating to 2, but still with gas as well, at least we should survive the night

You are indeed overly optimistic regarding the 1kw setting David, especially at -3.5 outside.

I would think at that ambient 1kw isnt going to cut it , should be alright with the gas , but being a hot water system will take a while to get enought heat transfer IWT .

1kw will not heat the van, it might maintain an already heated van. On the aquatherm wet system there is the option to use gas and electric at the same time. Do you have that option?

we can set both on ours, but think the Alde may ignore gas if it can see electric available

temp inside now 19C, but not sure if due to increasing to 2Kw or adding gas, but we will not suffer tonight at least, forecast -10C around Clermont Ferrand / Lyon where we might be tomorrow, will be leaving engine running I reckon

If you have 10 amp supply you can use 2kw setting as it is only 8 amps but do not use the kettle at the same time assuming it is a electric one.

we only ever use gas for kettle just for that reason, been there got the T shirt

set to 2Kw now with gas on as well but not sure if it even uses that if electric present, but 2Kw seems to be increasing temp at least

it is kin cold here though -3C with snow on ground which I think Carol Kirkwood says makes it colder

Although not fully Alde, the Aquatherm El has a trauma boiler and Alde underfloor wet system in cold weather I tend to leave it on 24/7. It's a lot more efficient gas wise than the blown air system that is also in the van. We do however used the blown air when starting from cold as it were.

that is how I think it works Paul

But it would be nice if it were clever enough to use the gas as a top up if not warming up

It will run on both at the same time Paul, certainly when warming up and my guess is that electric would take priority when up to temperature but not sure about that.

The built in heaters can't be very good then. I put a 1kw fan heater in the van when we get home to remove any damp and it gets it toasty warm.

Our van is set at 10 deg useing the 1kw setting and seems to hold 10deg ok but that is just while parked on the drive for frost protection.
When you require quick heat ie 20 deg on electric if you put the gas on it will use gas and electric together until the temp is reached.

On page 28 it says that you can prioritise the fuel source so that would mean it would use that first if it only needed one fuel source to maintain temperature,

   Select whether to prioritise gas heating or electric heating, when using both. Less demand will be placed on the non-prioritised fuel.

   If you’re hooked up to a site with a at rate 230 V supply, but s ll want the extra performance from gas heating, prioritise electric heating to save money on gas.
