If I find a motorhome with semi-air, i.e rear air suspension, is it possible to add the front after purchase or does the whole system need to be replaced?

It may well depend on the chassis and level of integration you want, for example a lot of IVECO chassis have the factory rear air and you can add front to this but the two systems will not talk to each other, if you wanted to upgrade to the all singing and dancing auto level version you would need to replace the full system.
