Welcome to Charmagne, best wishes in your new job.
I'm just hoping my renewal next month is in line with my expectations 🙏
Not well up on Hollywood Superstars, give us a clue ?

When I asked for a quote the lady didn’t know what a van Bitz growler alarm/ immobiliser was. She asked me to find out, What, next call to renew with comfort who knew

Read the smallprint in the Comfort breakdown cover if you have it, read about some startling limitations on cover

Here you go .... it does seem the poster was scammed by the recovery contractor (provided by Comfort) but even so ....
From facebook so usual caution recommended, but worth reading you policy small print

Beware ! Comfort Insurance (breakdown) are not fit for purpose for over 3.5ton vans in Europe !!
I posted recently about my breakdown in France just before Xmas.
The Policy Comfort offer has a £5k max limit in any one claim, under or over 3.5ton -
The difference in recovery costs has clearly not been taken into consideration.
£5k won’t get you home, let alone pay any other expenses!!
I was charged
€3000 to be towed off the road and 30kms to a storage unit - with limited access to the van.
€500 to clean oil off the road
The quoted
€500 to help load the van onto a trailer
€7000 to transport the van 250 miles to a garage to repair it
£3800 to get it back to the UK with no time expectation on when!
When I asked for help their Director said - fill in a complaint form, we will respond within 6 weeks!!
You knew the limit, you have to live with it!!

i was aware of the limit , but those costs are extortionate and a complete rip off.

so

whats the alterative breakdown cover then ? any one know.

RAC get good reviews
I arrange mine through AIB, don't seem to have the limitations of Comfort but doesn't seem overly generous in terms of alternative accommodation etc

i have looked the RAC up and its in the region of £290 / year for the advanced cover 1 vehicle .

I buy insurance for mh without breakdown then buy breakdown cover via "driver guardian".
£109 for my mh under 3500t with 90 days eu cover per trip.
They also cover larger mh's.
Don't know how good they are come crunch time though . You pays your money you take your chances 😉 Also I don't have to take it all out in one go which makes it easier on my pocket.

Just did a quote with DG and coming out at £259 for over 3.5 tonne and EU, so comparable with RAC I expect

Those charges, if true, seem to be well over the top unless there are some very special and unique circumstances I would have thought. Thanks for posting.

"AIB Insurance has just got a whole load better"

Well AIB's post would say that wouldn't it?

I have never trusted outfits that do self-agrandisment.
And it's none of my business but her write up doesn't seem to have a lot about insuring motorhomes in it.

There are limitations on breakdown cover over 3.5 tonne, I'll look it up and post some info. It's from a Hymer Owners Group on facebook
I am with comfort and have used the breakdown cover twice (5.3 tonne van) One of those was a recovery courtesy of a huge Crouch flatbed in May of last year so no issues here. A Class windscreen cover is unlimited as well

To drag this thread kicking and screaming back to the title.
If there is something that is guaranteed to upset me, it is a Company that offers a product for y but when they are told that the same product can be obtained for x (ie lower) suddenly find that they can very nearly match the lower price.
This is so even though one was an extant customer.
And that is why AIB didn't get my business this year.

Yup post break in, (MoHo was not taken) premium went from around £450 to over £3000 and was presented as doing us a favour !

That is shocking. Did you compare other insurers and what result?
Adrian flux was £1200 and last year was £800. Unfortunately it seems unless an insurance company can recover their costs it’s treated as a fault claim even though it’s no fault of ours. People who are unfortunate enough to have this happen will say the same.

The issue with that is that you, and others, will never use them again. False economy by their part.
I cancelled a motorbike policy with Swinton a month before the cover ended. About£25 refund but £50 ‘ admin’ so I said I would just let the cover lapse. They said that if the new buyer didn’t insure and there was a claim I would be liable. So paid £25. Didn’t go back to them for several years.

That’s insurance companies for you, can’t understand why they do things like that
