Hi All,

Having enjoyed six trips across Europe last year my van has succumbed to the ravages of time:cry: It's now on SORN. It has developed a leak and a stained ceiling and the tailpipe of the exhaust has fallen off. It is a Japanese import so the exhaust will probably have to be custom made. I am at the crossroads and am not sure what the step is. The money and effort required (I wouldn't even know where to start with the ceiling) to bring it back to sellable condition just seems insurmountable to me. And if I do not fix it first then what are the chances of selling as a project?

I would welcome any suggestions and thoughts.

Depends what it is. Bongos for example are popular. Other models perhaps less so.

Sorry, should have been a bit more specific.

Sorry, I'm none the wiser but it looks tidy. You might get an idea on value looking on ebay, autotrader etc. Then you could work out if yours is worth repairing. I guess there may be Facebook groups for specific models if you can find one.

Check out Andysimports10 on Ebay. They are in Norfolk but repair these regularly . You may have to email them from the advert on ebay.
Search on ebay for
223749355966. Put the number in and it will bring up a truck for sale. It will give you access to his own number to call for details on yours.

All the best Kev

I do not know your vehicle but have encountered damp ceilings in the past. In my case the damp got in through the seal between the front cab and the rest of the roof. There was a strip which was fairly quickly sealed on the outside with one of the Sikoflex products.
As for exhausts they are replaceable or can even have a sleeve fitted over the remaining pipe.
I must assume you have had enough of the van now and are only looking to sell it. Depending on the colour of the stain on the roof (rust or fungus etc) there are many products for sale to more or less remove them. Alternatively you could paint the roof lining after sealing it to prevent stains showing through.

The base vehicles probably Toyota or Nissan so exhaust and so on no problem, and the leak could be something simple like around a roof light then sikaflex would cure that, looks tidy and I would not think that expensive to repair as long as it's not rotten. ? Bob.

rosalan I tried to clean the roof lining but have made it worse! The brown stains just kept spreading:frowny:

bobandjanie The base vehicle is a Toyota Dyna Van but one exhaust fitter have said that there are no parts but I am not sure whether this is accurate.

a little leak gives a big stain. find the leak and seal it first, which may be simple enough and cheap. dry the damp and seal the stain or if really bad, reboard the stained area

the exhaust is a simple fix. any garage or mobile mechanic will source a pipe of the right size and fit it quickly

tired cupboards and soft furnishings can be tidied up easily, its not a major job

sounds more like you have forgotten why you bought the van. its not a x road, you just need to get back into wanting to travel, a few hours work would see it sorted

I wouldn't give up on it, there's a market for small MHs so if you can sort out the issues at reasonable cost you should get your money back - or decide to keep it yourself. :)

TheBig1 @ DBK Thank you so much for the sound advice. One more question - Is it a disadvantage to repair it now?

I would ask around, some are more helpful than others, ? even having one made from stainless steel would not be a bad investment. ?
Yes repair it as soon as possible and get it dry. ? Bob

get it dry asap, waiting will cause more damage. then it can wait for the stain to be covered and allow the water in the ceiling to dry out

the exhaust could wait till you need the van or before its mot, whichever is first

You can re-seal skylights and paint the top roof with Cromapol fibreglass white paint.
The inner roof can be re-boarded.

The stained roof lining.....what is it made with?, felt lining, wallpapered board, or plain white board?
Roof linings are not usualy done in one piece, so once we know what type of roof lining you have, it will be easier to advise on a suitable fix solution :xThumb:
Keep the faith, you will miss it in the spring & summer if you get rid, even new MH have problems, the more they are used the more they take to look after, but well worth it IMHO.

get an MoT on it and sell it as is, or just have it MoT'd to identify what mechanical work is required to get it on the road. You can probably have a stainless steel exhaust custom made for a few hundred pounds. put a cover over the top if you dont want to repair the leak and then sell it as a project. Its more likely to sell as a project with an MoT or at least an indication of what work is necessary

One of our work trucks is a Toyota Dyna. Highly unlikely parts aren't available, try asking elsewhere

why not advertise on here, it wont cost you anything ? what price are you looking at if you sell it?

First thing to do is to stop the water ingress, get on the roof and check/reseal any dodgy looking areas.
I would try advertising it as a project van for someone, make sure you have a good price in mind and if you don’t get anywhere near that keep it and do the work yourself, it’s not the end of the road!

I think your better off sorting it out, I remember someone had one for sale at one of the motorhome shows, and probably not as rare as people think, I would not be surprised if there is a Facebook page for them, everything seems to be on there.?

Back in the 1970's my mate acquired a Moskvitch van from a continental haulage company that probably came back from Russia, now that at the time was rare here in the UK but he loved it and ran it for a few years before selling it to an enthusiast. ? Bob

MisterB Agree with what you said. The difficulty is I really do not know how to price it. I might try and take some photos and upload it here and see what people think.

look for similar age vans on auction sites, then take into account the repairs to the roof (potential bottomless pit) the exhaust and any other known mechanical defects. You know what it owes you, if anything …. - if you really want to get rid, then offer it cheaply. Is it really worth you spending a couple of grand on it if youre only going to get four grand back on it? As I said, only you know what it owes you and whether you want to go through all the work potentially required? It can be done but its time consuming. Someone on the forum is carrying out extensive roof repairs etc and they have posted pics, not to put anyone off, but to show that it is possible, but I think they only paid a few hundred for it initially !!

Exhausts - just find someone that can make up to order - I had a complete (minus CAT) exhaust in Stainless Steel for a Toyota Celica for HALF the price of Toyota replacement. (Bedford).

Do you want to keep going away in a MH ? If so repair it, if not cut your losses and flog it

Seems the thread was a while back

but this is advise should another member find there in the same position at any time.

Just done a similar project. Bought cheap and had a great deal to do on it.

the secret is to do one job at a time.

write a list of items to do as as you go through the list it will get bigger and then all of a sudden it’s done and ready for more adventures.

take photos of every job as you do it and ask the forum for anything your not sure on.
it would be an adventure of another kind with images to save for later.

I found this on a quick google search. Might not be the one but the dents on the habitation door look very similar. If it is the same one it's been through an MOT and Habitation service before the sale
