No, it’s not The Marriage of Figaro but a real Spanish Wedding - the opera will be revealed in due course!

Sunday afternoon sailing from Plymouth to Santander, which we’ve done many times before on motorcycles, in cars, trucks, and even with bikes and lightweight camping gear when we cycled the Vélodyssée route back up to Roscoff, but this is the first time in a MoHo. Although unlike previous trips on the Pont Aven we were last on and last off, but the crossing was millpond smooth and the fare from the self-service restaurant was surprisingly good and very reasonable.

Plan for the first night was to head for Llastres and Camping Costa verde - nothing booked, which was just as well as the place was rammed, as was the beach. Having dodged that particular bullet we retraced our steps a couple of miles to the hamlet of La Isla, which I’d noticed down off to our right before turning off the A-8. The stars aligned and at the entrance to the village was a field specifically set aside for free visitor parking, including overnighting for vans - bingo! La Isla is a lovely beach with a couple of bars, one shop and a cafeteria.

With a schedule to keep to we headed off after an early morning swim, and found Coto Camper which is a short walk from Praia de Coto just east of Foz, and had a couple of non-electric pitches luckily still available at €11 per night. A great pounding surf beach, easy cycling along the boardwalk, and a decent bar kept us there for two nights!

…… Before hitting the road again to get near our weekend wedding venue between Santiago de Compostela and Pontevedra. Vilanova de Arousa fitted the bill and again there was luckily no room at the three main campsites which were again heaving. A small camper stop a couple of minutes cycle from several beaches and the town itself fitted the bill perfectly, although the €20 cost (electricity included) was a bit more that I’d have liked to pay! The swimming and cycling was however very good, so we can’t really complain.

Then it was time to head inland for 15 minutes and our park up in a neighbour’s orchard with 3 other vans in preparation for the following day’s celebrations - the traditional Spanish/Anglo/Irish wedding of our niece to a very eligible hombre in the small village church - Danny Boy was sung in both English & Spanish and went down very well!

A very joyous occasion followed by the reception in their ‘garden’ with welcoming Galician bagpipes and later a mariachi band as part of the ongoing entertainment!

After sleeping off the excesses of the day we were up later than usual the following morning, and after packing away and visiting the newly weds to say goodbye we hit the road, intent on getting some miles under the wheels before nightfall. Making use of the Fulli tag and some sections of toll autopista we managed to get as far as Laredo before turning in for the night, which consisted of a freebie park up near the Stellar Circus, which made for some interesting night noises!

Up bright and early this morning we got back on the autopista and pointed the van towards Francia for a long haul in the direction of Limoges. Our intention was to visit Oradour-sur-Glane but the apps didn’t rate the aire there, so instead we’re ensconced in the very bucolic surroundings of the village aire at Javerdat just northwest and will visit in the morning. Only 4 emplacements and the water at the service area doesn’t appear to be working - it is at the WCs and sinks - and this being France and a day with a ‘Y’ in it means everything is shut, but we’re relaxing nicely and getting ready for the next stage of our journey to a night at the opera (all will be revealed in due course!).

Cheers!

I thought from the headline it was about the best album of all time.

Well our overnight stay at the village aire in Javerdat turned out to provide its own dramatic effect. A weather front came in from the west shortly after we turned in for the night and the subsequent electric storm made us feel that the Valkyries were just overhead, accompanied by the cannons from the 1812 Overture - very exciting.

The night gave way to a grey dawn with a hint of remaining drizzle in the air, which seemed fitting for our visit to the martyred village of Oradour-sur-Glane. If you are ever in this area of France north of Limoges I’d urge you to make the effort to attend. I won’t go into the details of the atrocities visited on the population by the 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich as you can Google it, but suffice to say it was very emotional to see what was once a thriving village and population laid waste.

In a somewhat subdued and somber frame of mind, but with the weather improving by the hour, we then headed roughly northeast to get us on our way to cross into Germany at the Belfort Gap. Which dropped us nicely at the Camping-Car Park aire at Seurre on the river Saône - €14.72 inc electric - but is one of those awaiting the WC/shower facilities to be replaced. The small town is nice enough and has a great cycle path running along the river, but infuriatingly was completely closed for the afternoon and evening for some reason! Still a decent ride in the evening sun, followed by some of our ‘Spanish Wedding’ gifted wine soon sorted that slight inconvenience out!

Up and away this morning on relatively empty roads, (other than the section crossing the border which was busy with HGV traffic), has us now at Camping Park Lindau on the shore of Lake Constance/Bodensee. Due to time constraints we bypassed the planned visits to the Zeppelin and Dornier museums at Freidrichshafen, but will call in on our return journey. Here for three nights and cycling along the lake to Lindau tomorrow and then the opera on Friday!

Saw this bad boy over Friedrichshafen on the way in.

What a lovely wedding.
We went to Oradour Sue Glane last autumn and stayed on the aire. It was fine and quiet but we didn’t use the toilets just dropped grey water.
The village definitely worth a visit.

Early swim in Lake Constance this morning and then a cycle into Lindau and across the bridge to the Altstadt on Lindau Island. A very well preserved and delightful place to spend a few hours - either admiring the medieval buildings or people watching from the numerous cafes on the main streets or by the harbour. A few photos:

Protestant Kirche, which was quite Spartan in its interior and reminiscent of ones we have visited in Scandinavia (the white hanging things are part of an artwork ‘installation’):

And by way of comparison similar views in the Catholic Kirche just across the road:

Plus the obligatory ‘naughty box’ - there were four in total - makes you wonder what they got up to in times past!

Cycled back to the campsite via the local Lidl to collect steaks for our BBQ dinner, followed by another swim to round off the day and prepare for the opera tomorrow. IMG_0348.jpeg IMG_0351.jpeg

Totally thought provoking. Everyone should go as part of the curriculum.

Well, Friday came with clear blue skies and the temperature bordering on 30c, so we cycled along the Bodensee and over the border into Austria and Bregenz. A quick scout around and an early evening meal at a lakeside restaurant before we headed to the Seebuhne to claim our seats for the performance of:
IMG_0381.jpeg

I’d stopped off in Bregenz in 2019 with a mate on our Guzzis when en-route to Mandello for a visit to the factory, and had no idea they held an annual summer festival with the opera on the lake as the headline event. That year it was Verdi’s Rigoletto and I was blown away just looking at the staging - no performance that evening even if the tickets weren’t sold out months in advance.
IMG_4338.jpeg

You can still watch it on SKY Arts/NOWTV but here’s a sampler to whet your appetite:

Anyhow, I’d promised that we would make one of the next year’s performances whatever it was - because the set is so complicated to construct the same opera is preformed for two consecutive years - but Covid intervened and we finally made it for the 2022/23 season with Madame Butterfly. My initial impression of the set was that it wasn’t as ‘involving’ as the one for Rigoletto, (which IMHO is a marvel of engineering combined with art), but the subsequent changes using some very clever lighting and other visual effects as the sun went down over Lake Constance, really created a special atmosphere. No photography or videoing is allowed during the performance but here’s a few pics in the lead up to it starting:
IMG_0395.jpeg

IMG_0398.jpeg

Some large passenger ferries even disembark at the side of the stage!
IMG_0392.jpeg

And a sampler of the performance:

After a wonderful evening we cycled back to Lindau in the darkness with warm breezes coming off the lake to our left.

After the obligatory early morning swim we headed off to Friedrichshafen and a visit to the Zeppelin museum, where our budding aviatrix got in the swing of piloting a large dirigible!
IMG_0399.jpeg

Before returning to France by back roads and our current stopover on Lac du Der - apparently the largest artificial body of water in Europe - for a couple of days cycling, swimming and relaxing, and it’s rather nice here!
