No, it’s not The Marriage of Figaro but a real Spanish Wedding - the opera will be revealed in due course!
Sunday afternoon sailing from Plymouth to Santander, which we’ve done many times before on motorcycles, in cars, trucks, and even with bikes and lightweight camping gear when we cycled the Vélodyssée route back up to Roscoff, but this is the first time in a MoHo. Although unlike previous trips on the Pont Aven we were last on and last off, but the crossing was millpond smooth and the fare from the self-service restaurant was surprisingly good and very reasonable.
Plan for the first night was to head for Llastres and Camping Costa verde - nothing booked, which was just as well as the place was rammed, as was the beach. Having dodged that particular bullet we retraced our steps a couple of miles to the hamlet of La Isla, which I’d noticed down off to our right before turning off the A-8. The stars aligned and at the entrance to the village was a field specifically set aside for free visitor parking, including overnighting for vans - bingo! La Isla is a lovely beach with a couple of bars, one shop and a cafeteria.
With a schedule to keep to we headed off after an early morning swim, and found Coto Camper which is a short walk from Praia de Coto just east of Foz, and had a couple of non-electric pitches luckily still available at €11 per night. A great pounding surf beach, easy cycling along the boardwalk, and a decent bar kept us there for two nights!
…… Before hitting the road again to get near our weekend wedding venue between Santiago de Compostela and Pontevedra. Vilanova de Arousa fitted the bill and again there was luckily no room at the three main campsites which were again heaving. A small camper stop a couple of minutes cycle from several beaches and the town itself fitted the bill perfectly, although the €20 cost (electricity included) was a bit more that I’d have liked to pay! The swimming and cycling was however very good, so we can’t really complain.
Then it was time to head inland for 15 minutes and our park up in a neighbour’s orchard with 3 other vans in preparation for the following day’s celebrations - the traditional Spanish/Anglo/Irish wedding of our niece to a very eligible hombre in the small village church - Danny Boy was sung in both English & Spanish and went down very well!
A very joyous occasion followed by the reception in their ‘garden’ with welcoming Galician bagpipes and later a mariachi band as part of the ongoing entertainment!
After sleeping off the excesses of the day we were up later than usual the following morning, and after packing away and visiting the newly weds to say goodbye we hit the road, intent on getting some miles under the wheels before nightfall. Making use of the Fulli tag and some sections of toll autopista we managed to get as far as Laredo before turning in for the night, which consisted of a freebie park up near the Stellar Circus, which made for some interesting night noises!
Up bright and early this morning we got back on the autopista and pointed the van towards Francia for a long haul in the direction of Limoges. Our intention was to visit Oradour-sur-Glane but the apps didn’t rate the aire there, so instead we’re ensconced in the very bucolic surroundings of the village aire at Javerdat just northwest and will visit in the morning. Only 4 emplacements and the water at the service area doesn’t appear to be working - it is at the WCs and sinks - and this being France and a day with a ‘Y’ in it means everything is shut, but we’re relaxing nicely and getting ready for the next stage of our journey to a night at the opera (all will be revealed in due course!).
Cheers!
