Sitting on the idyllic shore of Lago Maggiore next to an expensive looking Cathargo. Just wondering. As I understand, the front double swings down when needed. Has it swung down on anyone while they were merrily motoring along?

They mostly have seat belt type straps to stop that happening to back up the locking mechanism.

I don’t have a carthago, but have a Adria A Class with electric double bed over the cab. It is also secured with a seatbelt type clip, which I assume is in case of electric failure!

We have a front double in our Arto and it has two safety clips that hold it in place.

Cheers but it must have happened to someone!

My Carthago A Class has cupboards instead of a drop down bed. 😀 My Hymer had an overhead bed with gas struts and a seat belt buckle, no problem. A friend who has an electrically operated bed in a C Class got thoroughly stuck when the mechanism failed with the bed lowered, very inconvenient and not driveable.

Only if they didn't use the safety clips I imagine 🤷‍♂️
Yeah. Need more than ointment to fix your head as you slam into that autostrada bridge support ....
Still, seems like you guys feel safe enough. Might be that our next moho is a c class.

Yes ours dropped down on us, 😬 thankfully I was able to hold it and we pulled straight into a quiet car park to fix it.
Think Id put too much up there with a topper, kingsized duvet and pillows. Its a blissful bed! We keep the duvet and pillows on the rear bed now and its fine.

My Carthago drop down bed was very unreliable at staying up when I first purchased it. After many frightening encounters and trips back to the dealer my local guy fixed it. That was in 2014 and I've had no issues since. They are a very heavy item to drop on your head and I was disgusted that the dealer hadn't a clue how to cure the problem.

Our drop down bed (Hymer B544) needs a little effort to overcome the initial resistance of the struts when putting it down. I’ve forgotten to secure it with the strap a few times and just notice it moving a little more than usual.
The way the struts work it can’t just come down by itself.

🙋‍♂️ Me me me, just the once, I don’t think it was closed right and there was stuff on the bed, not happened again and I’ve done 8500mls in it.
OK if it's "confessions of a motorhomer time" 🙋‍♂️ me as well ;) on our Flair as the Palace has cupboards, it had two very sturdy clips but they don't work if you don't clip them properly.

Any more from the A Class Marketing Department? 😂😂😂

You've talked me out of it!! Sticking with my Ducato-cabbed Rimor !!
It can fall down on my head twice a day before I’d go back to a coachbuilt!!😉😁😁
It’s not hard to shove it up when you’re relatively young 😉😉

I'm on my third A-class and the over cab beds never fell on me when driving.

However, I have an A-class because they are more economical in space which has been necessary for the last 20+ years. If I didn't have a space issue, I would not have an A-class. They have many good points but I find them less practical for maintenance and use.

Ours locks up but even unlocked it stays up on its own, couldn’t see it falling down.

I am in no hurry to go back to a coachbuilt cab. I find the A class so much easier to drive, you are sat in the widest bit and don’t have to think about the width behind. Then there are all the living benefits too.

We had a T5 pop top and the roof once popped up on the M6.
I know it probably wasn’t funny at the time but the image in my head made me chuckle🤣

I am on a coachbuilt after my last two were A Class with drop down beds. They never came down on our heads.
Access to the engine on both A Class was really bad, much easier on the coachbuilt. I do prefer the extra space of the A Class and the driving position.

I give that problem to my very good commercial garage , and they have never complained - well the boss hasn't, don't know about the grease-monkeys, but they do a good job.

I agree with all the positives about 'A' Class -space, driving position etc., plus easier security with no cab doors.

We have had our a
a class bed drop down twice once just one side the both luckily we were just pulling up when it happened the second time. On our Burstner there are two locking pins one each side that slot into a hole to keep the bed locked up. Over a period of time they appear to have gradually worked out of position. Quite scary and not impressed with the design.

Never been impressed with the way Hymer hold the bed up with an 8mm dia metal pin that only locates about 6 to 8mm into a plastic block on each side but it's never come down.
My mates had his Carthago one come down it has a similar fixing.

If they do drop the struts will stop it being sudden and it will rest on the high back captain seats so unless you are 8 foot tall not a problem.

On our second A class would never have any other type of van now, so much nicer to drive & use.

My experience is that they have either belt fastening or lock fastening. I doubt they would ever come down unless not secured properly.

Yes we've had our Carthago drop-down bed come down in our compactline not long after purchase (second hand) from a dealer. The front bed had not been used by us. It happened 3 times in quick succession without any bedding in place, just the mattress. Not a pleasant experience. Admittedly this may have been 'provoked' by a particularly rough/potholed road, typical of the Peak District. Thankfully we're not tall and the bed rests on the top of the seat backs. The bed does not have any straps just 2 'locking' pins that seemingly needed adjustment to lock correctly. Plus we also discovered that the overhead storage bin above the bed had come loose which may also had been restricting complete closure. We fixed the overbed bin and adjusted the Bowden cables (as noted by a fellow funster); fingers crossed we've had no issues since.
