It would be interesting if any one on purpose or inadvertently out stayed the 90 day rule and did anything happen, iam thinking of staying longer in Spain.

The most likely outcome is your passport will be tagged and you'll be refused entry to Schengen zone at a later date.

Yep, this is pretty clear. Anyone who thinks they got away with it this year may be in for disappointment on their next visit.

Penalties are: being fined "a large amount of money"; plus possible imprisonment; plus deportation on completion of prison sentence; and a lifetime ban on re-entering the Schengen zone. Not worth it, I would suggest.

Lots of folk break lots of laws with no repercussions ( indeed, not always knowingly or deliberately) so let’s not get too judgmental.
I guess we won’t really know for some time yet although there will almost certainly be a ‘sensational ‘ case that doesn’t reflect what’s happening with the majority.

Son in lawish outstayed 90 days in Romania (follow Schengen rules). Fined 3000 euros, deported and banned for 6 months
I wonder of we'll get any posts titled 'Not Happy - Barred from Schengen but can't get a refund on the ferry' next year.

Yea agree he should go for it. We will then organise a coach trip and protest outside the prison for his release…….or maybe not.

This is an interesting comment as I was under the impression that Romania was not part of the Schengen zone like Croatia and Cyprus but happy to be corrected.
Having just googled the above Romania is not part of Schengen yet so I am confused! I'd the Op saying you can only stay 90 days in Romania out of 180. If so I get that but it still would not count to you shengen days.

Romania isnt in shengen so the 90 days does not apply
But i did have a lot of questions asked when i entered it from Bulgaria and initially the border guard told me i couldn't enter without an invite or hotel reservation. So they are either misinformed or chancing it for bribes ... They detained me nearly 45 minutes

It's Romania's interpretation of the rules and how they are enforced. They are keen to become part of Schengen so probably know the rules better than we doSo nothing do do with Schengen rules really ?
