I need to renew my driving licence as I will be 70 in August this year. However, if I want to keep the C1 clasification I must have a medical examination. My GP does not provide this service, I have been pointed in the direction D4drivers, a specialist company who provides the medical examination service for £55.
Before I commit I wondered if any young 70 year olds have experience of this process?

Any advice much appreciated

Lots of members have used them with satisfaction. Seem to be cheaper than GPs.

They specialise in D4 medicals and are less likely to make mistakes on the form, causing delays.

D4Drivers were fine for the two times I've used them. They will do the eye test requirement. The eye test is not as thorough as a proper optician's test and is no substitute for it if you need an eye test for other reasons. But it fulfils the requirements for the licence.

If you take tablets for blood pressure, they will take your blood pressure, but will also ask you for some readings from the previous week or so, can't remember how many, maybe three or five, so best to take them along with you.

You can get the D2 and D4 forms from a main post office. When I got them they came together in one envelope, with an explanatory notes section separate.

D4 drivers are pretty quick with the medicals and should becreaonably local to you.far cheaper than your gp ,they will also do theceyectest assuming you have no particular eye issues.
You will need to take the d2 and d4 forms with you plus several blood pressure readings.
They provide detailed instructions when you book the check up it's easy to do on line and they will offer several dates and times and you just select which suits you.

The D4 doctor made a dogs breakfast of my form after I was sitting in the waiting room for over an hour during lockdown, with no social distancing. They refunded my money. My GP made a much better job of it but cost twice as much.

Have used them for my last 2 renewals, I usually get my routine eye test at the optician before the medical and just take the prescription with me. Make sure you complete all of the sections of the form and sign the bottom of all the pages before you go. Thats the easy bit.

Once all the paperwork is completed , you then have the joy of dealing with DVLA, dont know what the turn around time is now, but I waited 3 months for mine to be returned, and that was with no medical problems and no medication.

Get the forms submitted with more than 56 days left on your old license. If you do there is no need for a new photo, which appears to makes for easier processing by the DVLA. The new license runs from the date the old license expires.

If your licence runs out in August send off for the d2 and d4 forms now ,you can apply on line for them.and get your appointment sorted asap as the dvla are pretty slow if you have had any medical issues.
Dont wait for the dvla reminder

I used D4D for the first time for the same reason as the OP last year in the March lockdown. They were fine. Completing as much of the form as possible in advance makes sense, as does getting an eye test and documented result from your optician in advance. See this thread from March last year on DVLA delays, although this information on DVLA turnaround may not apply now.

https://www.motorhomefun.co.uk/forum/threads/dvla-waiting-times.254549/#post-4813478

From that a thread:
"I had the C1 Medical on Saturday the 20th February at D4Drivers, sent off the paperwork on Monday the 22nd Royal Mail Special Delivery (next day/signed for, £7.50) and got the licence back today Friday 5th March.
So DVLA did their bit in 7 working days, (assuming they are not working weekends, but maybe they are).
Better than expected."

The D4Drivers doctor will do a minimal eye test as I said before. But if you are having an eye test by an optician, take the D4 form along and he can complete the appropriate section. I did that for one of my D4Drivers medicals and it worked smoothly, one less thing for the D4Drivers doctor to do.

Download the form d4 from here....

Have a read through it and imagine the GP asking you the questions and your answers.

I have a pet theory that the forms are read by a computer initially at DVLA and if it sees a tick in any box other than the "NO" box, it spits it out for human perusal and intervention.

So you have to read the questions on the form and then try and answer NO if possible.

Remember the doctor at D4Drivers have no access to your medical records, whereas your GP (should he choose to complete the D4) will have access.

Under normal conditions, every three years.
DVLA may shorten this if they consider any declared medical condition may need to be checked at more frequent intervals.

Had my medical with D4 in early September. DVLA requested an ECG Treadmill test. The earliest I can complete one of these is mid January. I assumed applying for my licence renewal 4 months in advance would be safe but i didn't factor in the NHS policy of it being a non urgrnt item. Be sure to apply VERY early.

My husband had his medical with D4 Drivers this morning at the Horsham location. He took all the relevant forms as requested and was in and out very quickly... all OK.

Ooops, just realised this is an old thread!

I use them every year to keep my C license, although I get my optician to fill the vision part in after an eye test.

Applied for my replacement licence@70 to maintain C1/D1 on 15th November and received new licence 28th November :)

Of course, being Welsh, we get preferential treatment :) :) :)
Certainly seems like it 😁
