Having had a succession of issues with our Motorhome, engine and habitation ? this weekend the mileage crossed through 50K , 48K in our ownership over 6 years

I was just commenting to Bev that everything was running really well and I wondered if 50K miles counts as run in ??

The engine seems really smooth mpg is regularly just over 20mpg rather than just under ?

I did say maybe I shouldn’t mention it out loud but maybe our luck has changed ?

Stopped for fuel close to home, on restart the engine seemed to shake quite violently but did start and settled down, but with message ESP fault visit workshop and engine management light on ?

Got home parked up and decided to wait till next day restart and hope it cleared ? no such luck, now booked into Mertrux tomorrow to be checked

Sods law though, now booked in EM light has now gone out ? hopefully at least it won’t chuck itself into limp mode , that really is a dangerous feature

Hope it will be something and nothing , Mertrux asked if EM light was red or orange, I didn’t know it did both, but only orange, although when turbo failed and went to full limp mode it still stayed orange ? dread to think how bad it needs to be to go red

Just a diversion, how's your daughter getting on with her's?

Just a diversion, how's your daughter getting on with her's?

They appear to have stopped water getting in?

Done a few cosmetic things but they had a bad gas smell when out last and daughter has fallen out if love with it ?

We are away with them in our MH’s this weekend, the gas leak is being looked at today , hopefully if the sun shines they will love it again

I think a couple of damp weekends away in fields on their own last month didn’t help much

Our 130HP Ducato did exactly that once, difficult to start, shaking and shuddering and the warning light on orange. It was the morning after a long run home from a trip. Kept it running and eventually it cleared, the warning light stayed on for a little while but then disappeared after it had been stopped and restarted a few times. A test drive showed it hadn't gone into limp mode.

Never happened again, although much later had to have the throttle body changed - but that's another story!

Just a tip for similar engine owners - if the orange light comes on for no apparent reason try switching off, wait a short while then restart, revving up just enough for the alternator to start charging. Then do it again for a total of 5 times - this appears to reset the engine warning as long as the fault that caused it in the first place is no longer there. Has worked for me and a few others I've mentioned it to. But if the RED light comes on, switch it off and get it professionally diagnosed.

Wondering if it's the crankshaft positioning sensor David. I had one go on ours and when you see the size of it, its hard to comprehend how a small bit. such as it is, can have such an adverse effect on the engine.

Yes good luck with the engine diagnosis, hope its not too expensive to put right.
And!.....congratulations on hitting 50K miles in six years of ownership, that shows you are and have been getting good usage from your van.

When I was checking back over our time with Lola, in our 6 years with this MH we had taken her to 12 countries ?? that does include England , but we have covered a few miles, but I am sure a lot less than some ?

Sorry to hear of your engine troubles, fingers crossed its nothing serious.

Hi David,

We had a similar thing last year whilst in Germany with lots of different ESP, ABS, and other warnings. We went to MB in Stuttgart and they diagnosed an ABS fault, so they changed the ABS sensor, cleared the fault from the ECU and sent us on our way. About 50Km down the road the same happened we went to another MB Commercial garage and explained what the problem was. In the meantime Kim had trawled through HOGS Facebook and identified a specific ECU upgrade that Hymer/Mercedes had developed for ESP/ABS errors and mentioned it to the garage, they did this ECU update for us and to date everything has been fine....... that's tempting fate now  We can't find details of the update now, but worth you asking.

Hi David yes it was a chargeable upgrade, €21.00 plus tax, so it came to €24.99 :D2. PM me your email address and I'll scan the invoice for you, there are some product codes on it that may help.

Good luck with the diagnosis/repair and please let us know the outcome, we all may have need of it sometime.

Our PVC is 18 months old and has 17760 miles already. Only about 32k more to go to be run in then!

Any update yet David?

Maybe we could play Guess The Bill ?
My guess £1,500

Parked at Mertrux, they had forgotten to actually book me in but remembered the call, now got to wait for another waiting customer before being seen

All faults have cleared on dash and engine management light now not lit ? so I am hoping something and nothing and cheap ?

But expect a recurrence ?

Should I re consider my guess?

Looks like we have the same problem you had Ken, no fault at visit but recorded fault, new part on order new crankshaft sensor to be fitted next week

We are away this weekend so fingers crossed it doesn’t give up, but apparently the engine can cope without and relies on a different sensor?

If this really has sorted things it will be by far the cheapest repair we have done to date, not got a fixed fitted price yet but part is under £50 ?

Will confirm when bill settled

So I was closest then ?
