Hi all

I’m contemplating buying a 3D Printer to allow me to build “gadgets” for my Moho (as well as around the house etc), which may be brackets, stands, clips, holders or whatever!

I might even use it to prototype items for a more mass production (perhaps coming up with the next must have thingymajig).

Q1. Has anyone got a recommendation of a 3D printer?

Q2. Is there any “gadget” or component you wished you could get your hands on (and thus a good candidate for me to try and make)?

Hi ShaKen
There are loads of 3D printers on the market, all capable machines, but most need tweaking to get the best out of them. If you want a machine that is well sorted, good backup, and capable of printing for 1000s of hours, I would recommend a Prusa Mini. If you want to go to the next level, then the Prusa i3 MK3s. The printer is however only part of the equation. You need to learn a good CAD program. Only this way can you design your own thingymajigs. It is quite a steep learning curve, but once you master everything you won’t be able to stop making things. Don’t hesitate to ask more questions.

Hope that’s helpful. Paul and Chrissy.

Thanks for the advice PaulandChrissy!

I should hopefully grasp the basics quickly (I am an IT Consultant and gadget freak) but I’m sure I will have plenty of questions which I’ll join some forums for support. Any suggestions of friendly ones to sign up to?

What would you say I should be looking to spend to get a good entry / mid range one?

The Prusa Mini is £380. The i3 MK3s is £699 in kit form. I bought mine in kit form so I could learn everything about it. I was a mechanic by trade so building it was a must for me. There are lots of u tubers giving help with 3D printers. This is the website for Prusa https://shop.prusa3d.com/en/17-3d-printers
There is a waiting list for them, but for good reason, they are workhorses. They have a print farm of 600 printers printing printers running 24/7. That’s the best recommendation for me. My printer has run for 1500hours non stop since I got it. 👍

Thanks again PaulandChrissy.

If you don’t mind, I may send you a PM later this week for some further questions.

I have a Prusa I3 MK3 with a MK3s upgrade kit never fitted loads of rolls of filament that I am thinking of selling very low hours.
I have to many hobbies it is just sitting there collecting dust

You will need one of these, then you can just print your Xmas dinner

hchris i could be interested if you decide to sell. Do you give a free lesson too :-)

Would be interested to know the ongoing running costs. For instance, what would be the approx cost to make something the size of a clothes peg.

Yesterday's print job was the grandchildrens' Christmas stocking headers. At this rate it might take me a while to amortise the 700 quid... ;)

Looks like he/she cant be bothered to reply. Thats at least twice the Q has been asked. Not as if the user hasn't been back online. How rude!

Not the case - I’ve spoken to Chris via Private message and got the price from him.

If you do go into production ShaKen how about the lock on the Dometic fridge. Mine broke but I was able to repair it with superglue but a new one would no doubt be more durable. You can buy the lock for the more recent version online but not for my model.
I think that the OEM price is about £30 so there is potential profit in it!
No pressurex:-)

Hi paddymcc
Hope you don’t mind me jumping in. Obsolete parts like your fridge lock can be made. Only problem is we would need the original part to re create a new one. Making a new part involves lots of measuring and test fitting to get a perfect fit. Could however possibly make it stronger by beefing up the area that broke. Once perfected, though, you are quite right, printing them off quickly fo sale could produce a nice little profit, or pocket money.

Cheers Paul and Chrissy

Hi PaulandChrissy . I would be happy for you to borrow it for a few days. There are two on the fridge, one for the fridge and the other for the freezer so I could send you an unblemished (relatively) original. PM me if so.

Hi paddymcc
can you send a few pictures first so I can judge what kind of challenge it is. are the fridge and freezer locks the same.

Cheers Paul and Chrissy

I’ve now got my hands on a 3D printer and I’m starting my “education” by making hooks that fit into a sliding rail in the kitchen area that are fitted to my Chausson MoHo.

It’s an interesting learning curve and not a simple point/click to get a finished component that works.

Any Chausson owners on here that may be interested in the hard to find hooks?

You will never stop learning. The art is getting a really nice finish. Might I suggest using Prusa Slicer v2.3 as your slicer program.

That will keep you busy. Handy little stand. 👍
