230v TV with Inverter?

Hi,

I've been quite put off by the cost of 12v tvs (for brands I've never heard of with broadly very mixed reviews) and wondered if using an inverter like this (Amazon product ASIN B076P9PGX3) with a normal small 20inch 230v tv would work as long as the power consumption was below 300W?

Does anyone do this? Is this even possible? Any downsides?

We did this in a previous van on a small inverter we bought from Lidl or ALDI.
No problems whatsoever, although ensure you have a couple of batteries and a solar panel if off ehu to be on the safe side if watching more than an hour or two.

In my last van had a cheap Asda mains TV and used a 150w inverter. If you look on the back of the TV there will be a label and it will state the wattage. New LED tv's use very little power, maybe 25-30 watts. (y)
 
Yes doable, however, inverters are not 100% efficient,

so it it will use slightly more power than a 12v TV

A lot of 240v 20" TVs are actually 12vdc using a power converter on the cable..

If buying a new TV worth checking this before deciding on buying an inverter .. they don't advertise them as being 12v

Yes we use a 230v Samsung TV on a 200w psw inverter. The set up uses about 0.2 amps more than it would otherwise.
Get a small good quality inverter with low standby current like the Studer AJ series (y)
 
We have a 300w pure sine invertor runs 32” Sony smart TV, Sky box & a soundbar drawing about 4amps also runs the 27” TV in the bedroom
 
Using an invertor opens up the choice of TVs you can use and the latest flat screens which are pretty efficient. However, power usage is related to the area of the screen. 32" is quite a lot of screen to light. 4 amps at 12v means you're burning through 4AmpHours of battery in an hour (Derrrr! Corrected), so be careful of your useage.
 
4 amps at 12v means you're burning through 48AmpHours of battery in an hour, so about half of your average leisure battery.

sorry.. that is incorrect. you are confusing power (watts) with battery capacity (ah)

4amps at 12v = 48watt .. not 48ah ..

My set up is as follows,2x75ah batteries,300w MSW inverter,45w flat screen TV,100w mono panel,cheapo dual controller,I am a retired electrical engineer,I know people advise PSW to run TV's,but my MSW does the job, we are able to watch TV for 4 hrs nightly,by midday batteries are showing full, what's not to like about that!

Thanks all for your replies. I remembered I had an old small inverter in my car (the all in one cigarette lighter plug to three pin 240v jobbie) and gave that a go with a small tv we have in our bedroom but found the inverter had a constant fan noise which was a bit annoying.

As we plan to do a bit of wild camping and not rely on EHU I think an inverter is in our future but will go for something a bit bigger and properly plumbed in like some of you suggest (probably with a solar panel).

It seems inverters are 85% efficient. So you use 15% more power at 240v. A 25w TV will consume 27.5w through the inverter.
