2021 EHIC - Check Your Eligibility via NHS Site

Computer says No. once I got to the question are you studying?

Yep, me too. The conclusion on the other forum was that the EHIC is now shelved and anyone wanting to venture abroad after 01-Jan-21 will need a good health insurance policy.

Folks as with any link, always always look it up yourself.

This is the link to the EHIC card from the UK gov site you can check yourselves.

Just saying its different is all.

Odd ! Ours are valid until 07/25

If you're resident in the UK and not in the eligible categories, you're going to be disappointed, I'm afraid. Your EHIC will expire 31/12/20.

Being resident in the EU and the holder of an S1, my new one is on its way - it's not all bad news, you know ;)

Thanks for that. I guess we will have to wait and see what is finally agreed and how we are affected come 1st January! A bit presumptuous of you to say I'm going to be disappointed ! I'm happy for your own situation being a resident in the E.U. and absolutely ecstatic that my country is no longer a member of the E.U. and we will be in control of our own destiny, as a sovereign nation once more. Safe Travels.

My existing one is valid to 01/2025 but was told by NHS on phone today that it will become invalid on 31sr Dec and I must apply for new one, which I have done as a UK State pensioner, living in EU having had a S1 form issued.

I'm disappointed for you and all UK travellers who will be losing a valuable asset and probably facing increased travel insurance costs, passport/Customs hassle and time-limited access as a consequence. As far as 'wait and see what is finally agreed', it's there in black and white on the NHS website - how much more confirmation do you need?

I've long accepted the reality of the situation and I'm content with the outcome but I still see the waves of denial running through the forum. It's done and dusted....🙂

Bonne route (y)

Increased travel insurance , no prob , passport /customs , no prob I got plenty of time . 1/1/2021 bring it on 👍

We have to accept at some point that Brexit has increased costs and red tape and in addition eroded our ability to travel freely.

A lot of people seem in denial about the facts with Brexit, leaving means we lose the nice things like EHIC and inevitably our insurance costs will increase. The EHIC will cease when we leave the EU.

It’s fine to say you think Brexit is fantastic whilst also admitting it’s going to increase costs and inconvenience.

I am hopeful we will get a deal, in the middle of a pandemic with a tanked economy is just about the worst time to try the biggest change in economic policy for a generation.

Of course, the slim majority in the referendum may not have been there had they not lied through their teeth, but we are where we are.

I would urge anyone not to rely on anything but comprehensive insurance, medical costs can be eye watering. Particularly so if you add a repatriation flight in as well.

Yes we are where we are , unfortunately a lot of people still don’t get it ? Anyone who travels without comprehensive insurance are taking a risk , their choice . I know what I will be doing .

We always have medical insurance through Red Pennant , they are a bit pricy but I have always used them and will continue to do so .

Just had our renewal from Staysure. It's a few quid more than last year but offers 15 months for the price of 12, or pay now and delay the start until making a booking. Also comes with full covid cover including repatriation. I'm well pleased.

Are you honestly saying that voting to restrict our economic activity, freedom of movement and opportunities for our young was a little ill-considered? Time will tell.

I second Staysure , well please over the yrs with there cost , luckily I never had to make a claim but I know people who have and it all went thru smoothly ,no way would I just rely on EHIC, people got to take personal responsibility a bit more ??

Having met a fellow motorcyclist in North Africa who suffered a heart attack in Senegal and then had to sell his house to pay the repatriation costs we have always purchased travel insurance. So no change for us, fortunately we have not had to use Ehic or travel insurance, but you never know what lays around the corner.

We too have used Staysure and had to claim for the first time when in Australia . Broken kneecap . All costs covered including the physio . A tip is to get e mail confirmation of everything agreed at the time .

On travel insurance I consider that the EHIC card will get emergency medical treatment. Then repatriation has to be considered; if one is living and travelling on the continent then for many medical problems it will mostly be possible to drive home, maybe after a few days recuperation in one's own home-from-home. An example of this is when LennyB had to have his gallbladder removed in Germany, but after a few days they drove home. Another situation arises when one cannot drive but then there is MH storage and trains - OK that is a few hundred quid out of the window, but would not reach the total of the sums I have saved by not having travel insurance over decades.

The real problem comes when two people have to fly urgently on expensive tickets for a sick relative. For this we have been taking out insurance recently. Dropped recently as we have not travelled this year.

I am fortunate to have accrued sufficient funds to pay for a repatriation flight within Europe, not sell a house, so then it comes down to 'How lucky do you feel, Punk?'

Info here for anyone interested:

Important: If you are going to be travelling against FCO advice, eg essential travel only, you need to take out an extra option as that's not included.

It is my understanding that the ethic card is still valid after 31/12/20 if you are still abroad at that date and will only expire when you return to the uk or move to another county. Obviously the 90day rule would also kick in from 1/1/21

NOT ELIGIBLE FOR THE NEW CARD, but thanks Minxy girl, staysure quote £125.00, our normal travel insurance ran out in August, didn't bother to renew it owing to lock-down, that is ONLY for me of course, I'll check the wife's later, as I wont be re-insuring until May 2021

If I was in your situation maybe a call to Newcastle could clear up any ambiguity or doubt . Just my thoughts
