Hi all

Bit of a pain in the you know where, we are currently touring in Norfolk and our top hose at the radiator end decided to let go on the way here. We pulled over, as alerted by the alarm on the dash, I was able to push it back into place, top up the expansion tank and off we went. As it was the top hose I reckon it needed between 2 and 3 litres putting back in. This has now happened again twice so I assume that the built in clip/clamp which in the old days would be a jubilee clip is now worn to the extend that it won't hold firm for very long. Is there a diagram available on line showing where the other end connects? Can find all sorts for a transit but so far zilch for the fiat. Appreciate any pointers. Stay safe!

Thanks Pwilmo I will take a look. Much appreciated!

Can you not change the clip for a jubilee one?
Possibly but the housing is plastic not rubber and I am concerned about cracking it and making matters worse short term.

That depends how hamfisted you are.
It only needs tightening enough to stop it leaking.

I've never seen a rad hose, or any other hose come to that, with a built in clip.

Got a photo?

Had a peugeot 406 years ago with radiator pipes held on with built in clips rather than traditional hose clips, would continuously "blow" off it's top hose no matter what I did to try and get it to stay on, think it was down to poor design, just didn't seam to have much area to grip the radiator at all.

Give me a proper hose clip any day

Don't know if the op hose is similar but this is the peugeot 406 hose end, this went into the radiator outlet, then a spring clip held it together, bit like an electrical terminal, horrible system, can see it's advantages on the assembly line and maintenance for the first few year's, but once it's worn, it's garbage

I don't think they're "built in " clip, more a factory fit single use clip that gets damaged on removal so has to be replaced with a jubilee clip.
That's how mine appear anyway, 2003 x244

Is your van an x244 or X250 as 2007 was the crossover year for Motorhomes?

If it remains a problem leave the cap of the reservoir so pressure doesn’t build and blow pipe off.

Righto am attaching photo of the hose in question. To be more specific, the problem clip is part of the plastic end cap which takes the water flow on a 90 degree turn via the top of the radiator. The actual hose is jubilee clipped to this, its the cap, rather than the hose which is the problem. It is supplied as a single item as per the photo. I'm guessing once again done for ease of assembly but once the inbuilt clip is worn, even though the hose is fine, it's had it.
You can see the plastic cap on the left of the hose in the picture with the metal clip within.

£20 on eBay, have it delivered to your campsite. Or plenty of motor factors in Norwich.

Anyway to use cable ties to keep the plastic hose held firmly against what it clips onto untill u get a replacement , fingers crossed that it's just a crap design that's failed and not something more sinister like getting blown off via excess pressure from a head gasket starting to go, but if the part is easily available then it's most likely a crappy design :)
Hope you get it sorted soon

Thanks Bart. Yes ties may be another option. Am reluctant to change hose until back home incase something breaks and the issue becomes bigger - as is we should be able to nurse it home. I have noticed similar plastic end caps online for VW/Audi/Skoda on which the clip pull partially outward to allow the cap to be pushed into place, then pushed back again to clamp in position. However the fiat looks like it is just designed to flex enough to allow the cap to push on to the radiator.
Once it's all sorted I will report on here in the hope that others will find it useful, also thanks to everyone for a reply 👍

Hi all, well the 90p jubilee clip from the local wilko carefully clamped over the end housing held firm and got us home. It was a swine to hold in place while tightening up due to its position tight under the slam panel and the size of your hands but eventually do-able. Having now looked at the new hose it is very obvious that the built in clip on the old one is completely knackered. A couple of spare clips will now always travel with us just in case!
Happy travels 😃

The joys of going away in the MH , as nothing ever breaks when at home , but always when away :)

Thanks Jev 👍
