I am hoping I can pick your brains as I am considering buying a small 12v tv/dvd for my very small campervan. I know that Avtex are the best all singing and dancing TV, but, very expensive. Any advice you could give me would be much appreciated . thanks

Anything from a supermarket will do as long as it has a 230v to 12v transformer block in the power lead.
Simply make a 12v lead with suitable plugs and use that instead of the original power lead.
Avtek etc are more tolerant to voltage fluctuations and take vibrations, knocks and bangs better but for the price you could buy two, or maybe three, supermarket tv's.

Finlux seem to be good too and they use less amps than Avtex. After service from Avtex is first class

We bought a reconditioned one from Maplin (online). Good, inexpensive and with a guarantee.

We bought an all singing and dancing Avtek 21" led TV/DVD combo in November and I did not ask the price until checkout as I thought its going to be more than I want to pay, It ended up A LOT MORE than I wanted to pay but glad I did as its a really nice bit of kit.

I felt it was buy smart once rather than buy twice foolish.

Had Cello and had Avtex. Certainly Avtex is far better TV especially at viewing angles, colour and total package BUT more expensive

I have Visionplus Tv's and am well pleased. A friend has a cheap internet job and the viewing angle is really naff. All I would say is be mindful of where you are fitting it and the viewing angle if going for a cheap setup, you don't want to be watching everything in 'negative' format!!

Given you say "very small campervan" and you're looking for "tv\dvd" you may want to think about the tv having a usb playback option? You could rip your dvds using a pc to the usb stick and carry that around rather than a bundle of dvds so saving space?

Agree so long as the tv will play back the format the dvds are converted into as some are picky.

We've had cheapo ones and expensive ones and I must admit that the Avtex we have at the mo which is a few years old is far superior in picture and sound quality, and viewing angle ... we got it from Brownhills' ebay shop at about half price as it was an ex demo.

I
Last year we bought a Cello Traveller TV with an HD tuner (not just "HD ready"). Far better picture, viewing angle and sound than the Avtex it replaced.
agree my new cello traveller is excellant , just as good and half the price of the Avtex branded one

That was the main reason for us replacing the Avtex. And it worked in France when we were there in the autumn.
Brilliant. The Avtex is in good working order and has a great picture but SWMBO says we'll keep and don't bother with French TV but she's the one who'll want football on

Distance selling regs enable you to return it for any reason. So you are only at the risk of the cost of return if you don't like it.

Yes, full HD, in the sense that it has an HD tuner (as I said before). That was the main reason for us replacing the Avtex. And it worked in France when we were there in the autumn.
Was your Avtex an old model?
I'm looking for a 19" led TV and was going to get a current model Avtex but just trying to understand why your existing Avtex wasn't adequate?
Thanks

Yes the Avtex was an older and smaller model (16"). I wanted a bigger screen (screwing my eyes up to see), a better viewing angle and an HD tuner for a better picture and use in France, which only has HD digital broadcasts now. 19" was the biggest I could fit.

I have subsequently compared the picture on the Cello to that of new Avtexs in a couple of dealers and the Cello looks as good, and was a lot cheaper.

Just found a very cool feature on my Avtec TV........ Battery level indicator.

Not sure if its really that accurate but has potential to help.

Don't buy the Meos brand. Ours was the most useless pile of electronic scrap I've ever bought for any purpose.

We've used a Foehn & Hirsch 12v in our MH until recently and were happy with that. It's now installed in a bedroom in the house, because we've gone mad and bought an Avtex Series 8 HD for the MH.

I managed to buy a 18" TV/DVD, with Freeview set from Aldi in one of there weekly offers for about £84. Works very well, good picture and DVD has had a lot of use. Tuning the TV to find channels is a couple of clicks operation.

Spring is coming and I suspect Aldi/Lidl will have lots of camping specials along soon.

Do the cello traveller tvs have a powered aerial jack that would work with the axtex sth3000 aerial or do you need to separate power supply for the aerial with them?

Can't see anything in the spec to suggest they have. . So if you need to boost the aerial you will need a separate unit .. I will add that the new traveller 11 is as good if not better than the overpriced avtex ...also I am wondering if they are made by the same manufacturers with just slight differences as they look identical..Roy

I emailed a cello eBay seller to ask whether there is a powered aerial...
The reply is as follows

TV aerial has 5v power with an on/off option in the menu settings. I'm sorry I know little about Avtex products but to date have not had 1 single issue regarding lack of aerial compatibility.

So it sounds like it will work with the Avtex STH3000 aerial :)

He has further added
Yep just the same. The tv also has powered sat input (18v) compatible with self aligning sat dishes if required. Cheers

We just make do with a 43" LG television. Still works with a 12v brick power supply in the lead. :)
