In August, how likely is it we could tour northern Italy and the lakes and just arrive at campsites?

I'd like to be free to make it up as we go along, but on the other hand I'd want to stay at some highly rated sites occasionally - should I book a few 'fixed' places and wander in between them perhaps?

In July and August I suspect you will be lucky to get your ideal pitch, if any at all for that matter. It will depend on the site and it's desirability.

We went to Northern Italy in July and it was virtually impossible to get onto a site then - August is much, much worse!

The campsites on Garda and Isseo we've been to in July were rammed with Dutch, Germans and Austrians, mostly in touring caravans. We booked several months ahead.

There are also rows of pitches filled by pre-erected family tents for major holiday operators. Expect it to be very crowded!

Not a chance of just turning up to sites. If you haven't booked anything yet you'll be lucky to find anywhere now. The most popular sites would have been fully booked for July/August by the end of April if not before.

There are aires called Sostas but they are a bit hit and miss. Don't trust any of the books - check them out on Google maps in advance. There's a big one at Peschiera del Garda that's OK.

Some of the Italian sostas I've been to on this trip have been very disappointing, scruffy, litter filled, undesirables present, poor location, others though have been stunning. As said you don't trust the book or app, check out for yourself.
Peschiera del Garda was very busy in may, wouldn't like to be there in August.

Avoid the last 2 weeks of August.

We were at Lake Garda a few years ago for the first 2 weeks of August. It was busy but just as we were leaving it reached a different level. I don’t know if that’s a popular time for holidays with Italians, because it tends to get a bit quieter in Spain at that time.

We went to Italy (2011 I think) last week august and into September, didn't book, but didn't go to the big lakes. Lot more motorhomes about now. Many sites close early September and we found some sostas more expensive than the ACSI sites.

Was thinking about that
but driving through Switzerland or Austria
could be expensive for a van our size
