Tips on obtaining and using an EU Pet Passport

Our dogs have pet passports and we plan to get them rabies boosters the next time we’re on the continent ,surely the 21 days wait is only relevant for the first injection?

Yes it is, as explained in the opening post of this thread:

As the new rabies vaccination is obviously a booster, the date entered as the 'valid from' date in Section V should be the same as the date it was administered, in which case your Pet Passport will be available for use immediately. You can use your AHC as proof of continuity of vaccination. However, many vets will enter the 'valid from' date as 3 weeks from the date of administration. This is only correct where the rabies vaccination is the first one that a dog has ever received, which is obviously not the case when you have arrived in the EU with an already vaccinated dog. Many vets, though, interpret this 3-week delay as applying to the first rabies vaccination that is entered into the Pet Passport. Usually this 3-week waiting period is not a problem as you can still travel using the AHC. Only if you wanted to shortly leave the EU and then return again is it likely to disrupt your travel plans.

I admit I haven’t read all of the above but what I will say is closely check your PP before leaving Vet and-this was important for us-keep your AHC until back home because if there are any errors on you new PP your AHC will still work to get you home!

Hello. Many thanks for all the info above. We have EU pet passport but no space for tapeworm treatment! Rabies vaccination valid until May 2027. We are planning EU trip in August - what should we do on our way back in terms of tapeworm treatment? Do we need a new passport and rabies vaccination? Many thanks

Hi and welcome to the Fun!

Yes, you will need a new Pet Passport. As this is just a replacement it should not be difficult to get one issued with rabies vaccination details copied over from the old one. In this case make sure that the date entered in Section III (date of implantation/reading) is also copied over from the old Pet Passport.

According to the 'How to Complete Pet Passports' booklet, the replacement does not even need rabies vaccination details to be entered but then both Pet Passports would need to be carried.

Thank you. Could you let me know where is this information from and how I can access it online? I may need to show this to the vet in EU (we visit Poland frequently and have a bet there) as she insist he needs a new passport with a new vaccination. Many thanks

The page shown is from the 'How to Complete Pet Passports' booklet published by DEFRA when we were still members of the EU. You can find a link to it in the Pets forum in the following thread:

It is probably not still available online but you can find the current DAERA (Northern Ireland) version of the booklet here:

Maz you are wonderful for helping all of us beleaguered pet owners navigate our way through this unnecessarily complicated process of trying to take our predominantly canine friends away with us on holiday. I’m sure I speak on behalf of everyone who has contributed to this thread so far when I offer you a sincere and heartfelt THANKYOU for your efforts so far and for the future.

Cheers!
