Not because I have one but just interested ,why is it that whenever we get threads of broken down vehicals, you can almost guarantee it's going to be a fiat or occasionally a Merc or ford but do we ever get Renaults broken down , I can't say I have ever seen a thread with one.
Seriously this a genuine question, not taking the p.

Probably less built on Renault, our car is Renault and yes you see lots around, but compared to France where it seems every other car is a Renault their forums would have different results than say the UK or Spain. 😃
Or hopefully your right and a reliable vehicle and no problem 😉 but saying that it's 2014 and has far too many electrical gadgets. 😁 Bob.

Might be worth looking on "Ambulance About Town",or some other such site where more Renaults are used I can almost count on the fingers of one foot the amount we've seen as motorhome bases in the last couple of weeks we've been here in France!!

Don’t see many Renault motorhomes or campers compared with fiats and mercs. Even Ford seem think on the ground for motorhomes.
My first car was a Renault 5. Had to strip half of engine (it seemed) to change fan belt. Spent more time fixing it than running it but that said it was comfiest car I’ve had

Only been transported home once so far. Nothing major, fuel starvation due to the rubber Diesel primer had perished on it's seam, easy home fix.

Our Peugeot has never missed a beat 👌

When we were looking for vans in early 2014, Renault vans were non existent. I'd say something like 80% Sevel, 20% Ford

106k miles on ours and the only breakdown was the clutch slave cylinder failing, the gearboxes are supposed to be a bit iffy on the Masters and the Nissan and Vauxhall equivalents ?

We are on 200,000 km on our 2006 Master, 3 Litre, based Hymer...
Our gearbox isn't the most forgiving...

jumar, I changed the gearbox oil in ours (3 litre '05 Master) and added some Molyslip gearbox additive which made a huge difference to the gear changes.

Thanks for that..worth a try..👍

My gearbox was always noisy since I bought it, but it kept going another 8 years before it gave up in France but I have now got a new box and clutch in so if that lasts another 280000 miles we won't have done too bad ;)
But although as I say the old one was noisy this one is perfect at the moment , I don't know if they make different boxes or if they are all the same but this one seems higher geared somehow, doesn't seem to be as quick off the mark as the old one but get it wound up and it flies and the mpg thingy still says it's doing over 32 mpg so nothing changed there.
I wasn't really talking about major things though which obviously is going to happen to anything with a quarter of a million miles, more these nigly things that keep cropping up on here, dashboard, locks, leaking filters, airbag lights , auto gears , on nearly new vans.

Renault masters do break down the same as they all do, just as your own breakdown proved, it’s just there aren’t as many with that base vehicle that’s why you haven’t seen a thread.(Apart from your own)

I think part of the point here is the age of your van chaser. It’s old (like mine) so more simple, less to go wrong, more people know and are willing to repair it.
Apart from said gearbox and MOT ours hasn't seen the inside of a garage in 8 years.

Same with mine 👍🏻👍🏻
And I think that is a big part of it. We know them. Not just rely on someone else.

As a matter of fact if we could have got it back here it wouldn't have been in a garage to have the gearbox done, but not complaining, they did a good job on it.

Be realistic Charlie probably well less than 5% of Motorhomes built on Renault chassis, I don't think any current ones or for the last few years have been built on a Renault.

2003-2023 as self employed I have run 2 Citroen vans, 2 Renault vans, 2 Peugeot vans, Ford ranger + Transit based motorhome since 2009. A mix of new and secondhand. The Citroens were new run to 50k both no problems. The Peugeots both secondhand the second one was a problem and alway had to be recovered from roadside on Friday. It was too good to be true (cheep) 3 year old ex lease 33k on the clock, after purchased found out it had leased to hire company, service history vague. After a year I ended up putting it into a main dealer to find out what problems this van had. It had never been PDI, services history wiped and the software had been hacked in it. 33k? Hmmm maybe not.

Both Renaults had electrical problems first one immobiliser had to be reset regularly, thankfully it was old enough it could be done with central locking button in dash and remote key. Second Renault purchased prereg 2016 had airbags problems from 6 months old, main dealer spent 2 days checking wiring harness I paid for replacement airbag could never solve it. Airbag light would stay on in morning and work properly in afternoon after being driven. (Always MOT in afternoon) dealer finally recommended replacing wiring loom at £2.5k would solve it. Local garage told me to get rid of it. So it went in 2023.

So in 25 years I’ve only had to recover from the roadside the duff Peugeot (twice) and a 2019 VW polo with software issues. (3 main dealers have been unable to stop the polo lighting up like a Christmas tree every now and again)

We have this airbag thing with ours but have found it's a connector under the driver's seat if it comes on , which it can do anytime , it can go for weeks without coming on or twice a day but all you have do is reach down and hold the connector tight and it will go off.
Now looking back at previous mots it's mentioned right back to when it was an ambulance, I don't see why it's got a connection, it could easily be solid wire, but darent remove it as folks say it can go off if you undo it.
But anyway it hasn't come on for any MOT we have had done so just let it get on as it likes.

Who eats more grass; black Sheep or white Sheep?

I looked at possibly buying an old Renault ambulance to convert I'm pretty sure quite a few have replacement engines and gearbox during their use as an ambulance.

When we first started looking for a MH about 7/8 years ago I think there was an Adria Matrix 670 available on a Renault or Fiat platform, these days Adria offer The Duo on a Renault for some reason, but yes they are a rare choice on most other offerings.
Must be down to availability in big enough numbers, plus waiting/lead in time etc.

My niece was going to buy the van from me, so I had everything done so it was right, hence paid for airbag new tyres brakes cam belt etc. spent £2k on it then she decided it was not right for her husband. Put it on gumtree the day after I sold it the airbag light came back on. The new owner went to main dealer that fitted airbag and created hell about it. They bodged (temporarily repair) one of the connectors to get rid of him. He was someone I didn’t want to sell the van to as I could see he was trouble.

On start up the airbag circuit checks the resistance on all the parts. If it has a bad connection it goes out tollence and leaves the light on. I think in mine the bad connection was in the steering wheel, when he test drove it he hit the horn hard and started the story again. The dealer always disconnected battery for 30 minutes before working on the connectors, but that could create more problems with an older van.

In hind sight I would have dumped it in auction with faults, and been £1k better off.

Don’t know if they still do it but if they changed the clutch they would stick a new gearbox on and send the old one to be refurbished
