As I just posted a thread about my shingles attack with a picture of me in knickers, I’m obviously in an over sharing mood!

In that vein UTIs or water infections…
I actually don’t get them that often even though with my MS it’s more common.

However, whilst away in Greece I got one and had to find a medical center for testing and antibiotics etc.

A friend has since recommended D-Mannose. This is a powder you take a teaspoonful every day. It prevents attacks.

It’s cheap and incredibly effective.
So if UTI’s are something you struggle with I highly recommend it too.

I’ll post a link from Amazon. It’s available in tablet form but I don’t have any experience of that. I simply put a teaspoon in water and drink it every morning. It doesn’t taste of anything, just slightly sweet.

Amazon product ASIN B01JZ4GF5A
Hope this information helps someone.

Thanks Mousy don't often get them but this would be handy to carry just in case.

On a similar theme, four of us we were on holiday in Norway a while back and my sister complained she had cystitis. I mentioned bicarb helps and she asked if we happened to have any in the caravan. We did, as my wife needed it occasionally so we always kept some with us. She lived happily ever after.

Be careful with cranberry and blood thinning medication.

so presumably need to be careful with taking this d-mannose too then if on blood thinners, if its the active concentrated ingredient in cranberries ?

After years and years of trying to find what works for me (one cannot keep running to the docs for antibiotics) i found these.
Been taking them for about 5 years now and only on rare occaisions do i have a flare up, then not too serious.
Tried the cranberry, the powder, other brands etc etc.
Don't buy off Ebay or Amazon if you want to save a few £s. Can forward where i get them if required.

D-mannose is a sugar and doesn’t interact with warfarin or any of the newer blood thinning agents fortunately. It’s not quite clear which bit of cranberry juice causes the problems with warfarin as it’s the whole juice with bioflavinoids broken down in the liver and is full of all sorts of goodies which are fine for most of us. You’re right to be cautious of course.

Sorry I meant to quote dryad not you. I do apologise.

It was interesting that when we were in Greece the first thing they gave you was D-mannose!

Cliff told the nurse practitioner about it at his surgery and she had never heard of it!

The powders work out cheaper than capsules, and it’s been a miracle cure in our house!

Thank goodness for MH Fun, and you guys of course.
TinaL has had a severe bout of UTI's since October, she has given samples to her GP, they have prescribed 3 different anti biotics, the last one was Penicillin based Amoxicillin for 7 days still not sorted.
I have literally just taken another sample up to the GP to be sent to the lab again, The GP is concerned about taking too many anti biotics, which may have complicated her symptoms in that she now has thrush to deal with, and kidney pain now also.
I will now go up and collect the latest batch of anti biotics, sorry cant remember the name just now, but will report back when I know, but it is the most common one used in UTI's apparently.
She also mentioned getting some D Mannose Tablets as they, she said, worked with some people, not all, but worth a try, as sugar builds up in the bladder, leading other symptoms such as thrush.
I see when looking on line that the ones available vary in strength 500mg up to 1500mg, and the quantity varies also.
bobnick pills are listed as 500mg £11 for 120 tablets, £26 for 240 from I herb online, strange as it would appear to be cheaper to get 2 bottles of 120 at £22 than pay £4 more for 240. They have The Pure Powder 10 grams for £26.28.
Will probably order something like these below.
Thanks again everyone.

Get the powder I mentioned instead of tablets- it’s much cheaper.

They only work on E-Coli, but I think it’s the main bacteria that hangs around, so it will hopefully be successful.

Cliff has had his life changed- he was constantly on antibiotics, but since starting D-Mannose he’s been clear of any infection.

As been said, don't work for all.
I tried the powder for 3 months, didn't work.
Tried so many combinations of varying strengths over the years.
Found what works for me and posted accordingly.
It's trial and error over a very long period. Don't expect instant results with whatever you may choose.

TinaL UTI Update:
She has just finished a longer course of Amoxicillin, 3 tabs for 7 days, pain whilst peeing has improved, but its still there, along with the urgency to get to the loo at all times of day & night, bit better but not great.
I asked the GP that as well as anti biotics mentioned her taking D-Mannose, if her current once in the morning 250mg scoop, could be increased to two scoops a day, and she could not answer, but then again did not suggest it would be harmful.
She did ask how much "water" TinaL was drinking per day, the answer was about 3 pints of Barley water, plus 1 coffee AM, and Tea during the day, I didnt mention the Rose Wine.;)
GP then suggested that "ALL" of us should be aiming to drink 5 pints of plain water per day!...Yea Right!
Maybe add a squeeze of fresh lemon to flavour it, but definitely no Barley water or any diluted fruit juice as they contain sugars/sweeteners, natural or otherwise, that feed the bacteria in the gut, which is where the E coli is coming from.
So its off to get another sample bottle at the surgery tomorrow to see what shows up, or is still going on with any bacteria.
My question to you is....what do you reckon on TinaL taking 2 doses/scoops of 250mg D-Mannose morning and evening, instead of just one AM?
Here is the D-Mannose powder (below link) she has been taking for a while now.
Many Thanks to all.

Interesting to read about the fruit juice flavourings. I have been having the robinsons sugar free flavouring for years and years, i take it very weak, a tiny squirt to a pint.
However, i am wondering if the persistence of the uti although mostly controlled by the D-Mannose capsules i take has any significance.
Interesting.
As for your question, sorry i cannot offer any advice.
I tried similar powder years ago, it did nothing for me.

If I ever reach that age I will remember this 🤣

Sorry i didnt realise id contributed to this thread in early december🤷‍♀️

I have been having repeated uti,s after treatment for prostate cancer and I have used cranberry juice which helped but my gp has prescribed a drug called Hiprex which I have been using for the last month and so far no recurrence👍😀

Les, Cliff’s researched this and he’s found you can take 2 grams three times per day if you have an infection.

It only works on E-Coli though, and Tina should go to the surgery and get a sensitivity test, where they can find out what the bug is and give her targeted antibiotics.

Hope she can get it sorted soon.

Would these be OK for someone with low nuetrophils.

I can’t see how D-mannose could affect anyone with low neutrophils really as it’s just a sugar. The idea is that it helps guard against infection and people with low neutrophils have trouble fighting off infection. It only works in the bladder anyway, it’s not a systemic effect.

Thank you Carolyn that's very helpful. Xx
