I read somewhere that speed camera warning systems must be turned off when in France. Being a French law it's probably one that is never enforced! I can't imagine a gendarme snatching my satnav off the screen and going through the menus to see if the speed camera warnings are enabled.

Has anyone ever ended up on the wrong side of this French law?

No. The companies that provide the sat nav mapping and warnings altered their product some years agoto comply. Most now show warnings about a zone or no warning at all in the countries where warnings are probibited. My Garmin system works in that way and has done for probably four /five years now.

I think this issue is why our Garmin does not show actual speed camera alerts. Instead it flashes up a message"Dangerous road segment" which somehow just happens to coincide with stretches of road with a speed camera.

That's useful info. I've got an Avtex Tourer Two satnav which is basically a Garmin Camper 780, so that should comply with the French requirements. Thank you.

Have a look at magic earth sat nav they seem to be on there also my Tom Tom shows them

Yes, my sat nav is the same model. Remember to regularly update via the Garmin Express software. They usually send out a monthly update of the "Cyclops" element aka speed cameras.

I have the same one, it flashes up as dangerous road…

Tom Tom shows them as Safety Zones.

This has been in place for years. I remember getting an email from Tom Tom saying all French Speed cameras were to be deleted at next software update and not to use them in the mean time. I believe the French Government take action against the equipment suppliers if found not just the end users.
The use of Dash-Cams are also illegal in France.

I don’t believe that is true!

It is illegal to share dash cam footage other than with the authorities, but it’s not illegal to own or use one.

It seems that this is a grey area and that even the French are buying them now.

Waze indicates speed cameras by the message Police Ahead.

I seem to remember reading somewhere on the forum a long while ago that a person had a collision with a cyclist exiting a roundabout in France, and they were released and allowed to continue their journey as a result of French police viewing onboard dashcam footage .

Goes back a long time, 2002 I think, I used a snooper in the U.K., removed it as illegal in France but left a detector which was fixed at top of screen

French law says even that is illegal despite me showing the cable ends with no display or alarm possibility , even if in boot it would have been illegal if found, owning it is illegal , I was pulled out of a queue of traffic

Cost me €800 cash and a few hours at a detention area and the sensor confiscated

Possibly not quite the same as sat nav warnings, but wouldn’t want to find myself in same position again

This did happen on the run home from Le Mans 24. hour race Where it is well recorded that the police go out of their way to pull Brits in for traffic rules breaches

Yes it is what the satnav do in France, just saying "dangerous spot" so you slow down . And to Thornebt They DO look if they think you have used the warning to avoid a fine. Don't take it too easy, you could end up on the side of the road with a complete check!

Our Garmin sat nav was warning of "dangerous road conditions" when speed cams are present on the peage, Took us a couple of days into the trip to work it out :)

What makes me laugh is that ost if not all fixed cameras in Francehave their own advance warning signs

Yeah yeah.... You think! But, some are fake, and still you slow down... and you never see where the camera was because there are none, and some come by 2 or 3 !! And so, you think, pah silly them... You slow down and once you see the flasher you think, soooo easy, and then you speed again and THEN .... Flash! there was another one a few hundred metres further up , or even just a few meters away, just to give you a little time to be foolish!

They are physically well hidden in some places where they havent been burnt down but I agree, they are very easy to be aware of with their warning system.
80 sign, warning of speed camera sign, another 80 sign, but of a dip in the road and there she is on your right !

she is on your right !
And as I said, you sometimes don't see any, because you missed it/them . On little roads you can have them on the left, facing you. Of course you think it's for the coming cars on the other side, but no... they're for you!
And BTW sorry for the numerous mistakes I have made on my previous post. I have seen them but ... too late!

The one just on the way out of a 50kmh zone is popular as your leaving a village.
