Hi All

Please see attached pic.
Do I have a problem with my battery or something else?
Am I overcharging?

The battery is about four years old. It's one of four. No other batteries have buildup.

Looks Nasty! Don't touch it with your hands as that is acid. You can remove the build up with Baking soda in water as that will neutralise the acid and clean off any remaining with a terminal brush. When clean put some vaseline on the terminals to prevent oxidation. you will need to clean the terminal leads and or replace if they are really bad. Of course there could be an underlying problem with the battery like a cracked case or burst cell ...but not always by any means. Hope this helps.

Its quite a common ocurance
Pour boiling water over the effected area, dry off and then apply some grease or vasaline to all the metal parts and battery post

I suspect it just needs a clean..

remove the negative/earth battery connection first ,

pour a mix of baking soda and warm water over the corrosion..

once clean, remove the post connector and clean both the post and inside the clamp, you can either use a small wire brush or buy a specially shaped one from an auto shop..

once clean, replace the clamp and smear all over with petroleum jelly.

finally replace the negative

Thanks for all the replies folks.

I must say this is the first time I've seen this sort of buildup on leisure batteries. I'm also concerned that it's only on one of the four batteries.

I'll clean it off and see how it goes.

I agree with the others regarding boiling water but DON'T clean the terminal with water if you're stood on concrete.

my past experience is it will stain the concrete light brown and you cant get it off.

could just be the quality of the concrete, but my aunt went mental when i did hers on her drive....and the stain is still there years later.

Until I get the battery right out I can't use water anyway!
...it's a Euramobil with double floor.

I may need to get a bowl of water in there real careful to dip the terminals in.

But why would that only affect one out of four batteries?
It is caused by a poor/dirty connection in the first place, so a good clean and coat in vasaline will cure it.

When I got the battery out I discovered that the casing around the terminal was damaged. Probably happened when the batteries were last serviced.

...new battery me thinks
