Just a tad..
Any of the Netgear routers. Mine is somewhat older now, but they are nice quality kit and just work! I can do thing like guest internet access and the app is very intuitive…

I’ve just decided on a Teltonika RUT950, it has two WiFi and two LTE external connections plus two sim slots.
Found a used one on eBay for £85.
I went for this after seeing the new Avtex system which they claim as their own but is in fact a Teltonika router and a Panorama aerial.
So based on that I also chose the Panorama aerial which arrived today. It was a toss up between the Poynting and this.
Fitting tomorrow.

Does the RUT950 have its own software/app, or do you use something generic?

The RUT950 and 955 comes with its own firmware which you can control from your laptop. There is no dedicated app to setup. However, when you buy new you get a months free trial to the Remote Management System, and for that there is an APP called RMS. It costs around £22 per annum for a subscription and you can remotely monitor/manage the router. The 955 version has GPS also and can act as a tracker. If you intend to leave a van in storage this can be quite useful. Guy

Thanks for the comprehensive reply. (y)

I’m casting around for the most suitable Mifi components with an eye to future proofing the installation as much as possible. Looking at the MIMO-3-17 antenna and the Netgear 5 Nighthawk 5G router is interesting me. What are the advantages of the double SIM slots on the RUT950?

I looked at the Nighthawk 5G but it is a lot costlier. I am sure other 5G routers will be along shortly. With 2 Sims you have fallback if one of the network signals is weak. I use 3 and 02, and if I travel I can insert a Spanish Sim etc if data allowances are restricted. The RUT950 are also designed as permanent fittings onto a DIN rail and can be wired into the vans system. Guy

As Guyadria mentioned, the teltonica have their own firmware, also the RMS. I don’t bother, if need to change settings, just type the ip in the browser.
I have the rutx11, today I tested the WiFi range in fairly clear site, few trees near the van. Mind blowing 175-180 meters with two bar signal, 2G channel, on mimo v3 12-15. I was on a farm doing some fence, and the distance was quite accurate. I never had a router with WiFi signal over 40-50 meters.
If the van is parked on the road outside, even one two houses down, I still get near full signal in the house. Thanks to the antenna on the roof.

Thank you both for putting me onto the Teltonika routers. (y)

As I have access to business purchasing for commercial products I’m heading towards the RUT955 in conjunction with the Poynting MIMO 3-17 providing LTE, WiFi, and GPS, which as you rightly say, can be useful to act as a tracker.

Check netxl for bundle prices. Don’t be shy to drop them a email and ask for a bundle price. I did and got a reduced price as bundle, with a order code. Placed the order and got it next day with DPD.

Will do, although Eurodk-uk (eBay) from Latvia blow them out of the water on the 955 price already £160.78 + £9.25 postage. I know there is a possibility of VAT being added to that price once it arrives in the U.K. but I’ve had numerous packages come in from the EU recently and not one under £1k has attracted VAT!

Good choice. I am planning an upgrade to the Poynting MIMO 3-17 myself. By the way if you do not want to pay the annual subscription, you can also set up tracking via mapmypos dot com. Unfortunately the detailed instructions are in German, but google translate sorted it. It is a free service, Guy

Thanks again, but I’m now well and truly falling down the Mifi rabbit hole!

As this is a totally ‘from new‘ installation in a vehicle coming early(ish) 2022, I’m keen to future proof it as much as possible while assembling the components prior to delivery to ensure I don’t run into supply issues down the line - it’ll also give me something else to get involved with, along with refillable gas bottles, while I’m kicking my heels waiting!

After viewing/reading a few more reviews the RUTX12 is coming in as a a very strong contender (I’m a sucker for new tech) and the added cost won’t be too much of a burden. Waddaya think?

Our Netgear M2 works brilliantly for us, we now have it unlocked so can use any sim in it, currently got a 3 unlimited data sum in it. Now we have changed vans I also need to look at a decent mimo aerial

Spec looks great for X12. Only reason I went for lower 9 series is that I suspect imminently they will start rolling out 5G routers. If you are getting specs for 2022 I would keep and eye on things before committing, Guy

That’s why I chose a used RUT950, the aerial is 5G ready and sometime in the future I’ll change the router.

Slight diversion, I have an Huawei E5577 with ext antenna ports and a Poynting MIMO 3 v2 -12, any reason to suggest a RUT 950 or above would improve broadband performance in anyway. I'm not interested in VPN at present, multiple users or hardwired devices where the differences maybe obvious. I suspect my limited factor is 3's network coverage which I've found is widespread but not necessarily of high quality.

Huawei B818-263. Blazingly fast even without my pounding Ariel. Previously had the Huawei e5577 but nothing like as good as the B818. Use AliExpress & save £100 from usual Amazon price. It’s so good I’m considering using it as broadband in my house with unlimited data sim

We currently have an E5785 connected to a puck antenna from MotorhomeWiFi.

Does the RUT950 have carrier aggregation? I was chatting with a panorama antennas dealer who advised getting a router with carrier aggregation for the best performance.

Good advice as this appears to be happening reasonably soon - according to one of the dealers Teltonika are due to release 5G versions in Q1 2022. Think I’ll get everything else arranged and hang fire on the router until the new year. (y)

Not sure about that but the RUTX12 allows ‘load balancing’ due to it’s twin modems. Have a look at the YouTube videos by ExploreVanUK on both the 955 and X12.

Thanks for posting the video, gives me pause for thought regarding swapping out my E5577, however I wouldn’t need to wait for the 5G version it will be years if it all before I could get 5G speeds in the rural areas I visit with the van. On my visits into Peterborough which has 5G I can’t say that I was overwhelmed by the speedtest differences either.
