Off to the Tunnel tomorrow then on to Jeugstadion in ieper tomorrow and Saturday then Dunkirk on Sunday for the market (if we can find it). Overnight at La Licorne before coming home via Cite Europe in an effort to alleviate the European excess wine lake. I know so public spirited.
Any Funsters in Ieper this weekend?

I'm not , but could I ask you to put your thoughts etc. in a post after your trip so we can all use the data if we want to go on a similar route. (y)
I can then bookmark it for reference.

You can pre-book for Jeugstadion Aire.
We turned up (granted during Summer) and although plenty of space, all had been prebooked.
We ended up staying on the new aire which is a little further out. (I posted details on here if you need it)

not long enough
The aire part of the site is €15, the site is only €20, we had 2 nights there last weekend, the aire was full but for the difference in price I would chose the site

First time for us, the Menin Gate ceremony is a must, but the new Flanders Fields museum in the Cloth Hall was fascinating

As was Tyne Cot cemetery and the Paschendale memorial, we didn't have time for the museum there, need to go back

8pm Menin Gate - don't be late.

Sometimes if you're lucky they have live music outside the cloth hall.

And if you leave the campsite via the footpath at the back and walk along beside the moat towards the Menin gate you should come to this memorial which I found quite moving.

The Menin Gate is a must for anyone who hasn’t been. It can get very busy. We started waiting at 7pm so that we could be at the front.
We also cycled The Peace Trail which was very humbling . Visiting lots of the little cemeteries out in the countryside. Maps are available from Jeugstadion reception.

Thanks all. We've been before but stayed in a b and b. Sadly though the people we were with were more interested in Belgian beer than Rememberance. We're going to look for a conducted tour of the Salient tomorrow. Tonight's plan is to pitch up and get to the Gate in plenty of time.

Hard to believe that the town was almost levelled during the war and has been rebuilt on the same street plan.

We went to the passchendaele museum. It's not far from Ieper, and well worth a visit. You can over night in the car park. We did, and had a quiet night, and walked around the grounds in the morning.

we wild camped at the lake ( Lake Zillebeke) just past the new aire - no facilities at all but nice and quiet - we stayed there mainly because it was a british r&r camp at one time. it was shelled at times and my great grandfather was killed there during one of the bombardments.

Quite correct regarding the Aire and the pitches are a little close but they are on hard standing, we opted for the site but would choose the Aire pitches next time, the site pitches are just as tight in reality when full as is often and some of the slopes are ridiculous and too tight to get in the good pitches of which there are very few are given to those that stay beyond the 2/3 night period.

The Menin Gate is very emotional I was broken when we visited during the day just seeing the names of all the brave men which completely cover the structure at the front, back, sides, top everywhere if there’s a space it contains a name.

I was the same, made even more tragic when you realise that these are just the ones with no known grave, from just this part of the war, I believe there are 54,605 names inscribed on it.

It's difficult not to shed a tear when they play the last post.

one point a lot of people miss is the number of overseas commonwealth names on the memorials.

re the site or the aire, i would suggest taking a look at Zillebeke Lake. you can park freely though there are no facilities. its about 500 yards or so past the aire
