My leading lady has a very sensitive nose and stops having a good time long before the toilet cassette is half full. We do use biological washing pods to neutralise things and they seem to have some effect.

Remedies involving bleach and traditional cleaners result in a smell fight that neither of us can tolerate for long.

Any secret tips would be greatly appreciated.

I'm new at this whole thing but I read the past threads on this subject when I started off and I tried using biological washing powder when my Thetford Blue ran out but my better half complained (although I could live with the occasional slight whiff). She insisted on an eco fluid called 40 Shot which is £11 on Ebay. It's meant to be kind to the environment. Each shot works out at 27.5p and because it works well you don't need to empty every day (which is a bonus in itself). Our cassette typically lasts a day and a half or even two days so I get at least two months out of a bottle. Less than 20p a day for a fresh smelling lavvy and a happier Martha is money well spent. I was sceptical because it was eco friendly but it's as effective as the Thetford Blue nuclear option.

£164 for a SOG was too much for me to fork out in one hit when we first got the van so, along with several other things I could have bought, I decided to leave it. It's in the wait and see box along with an extra solar panel, a second leisure battery and a bunch of other stuff I can't afford.

Having said that, providing I really don't need anything else, I think a SOG would be cheaper in the end.

I'd be interested to hear whether SOG devotees really don't need to use anything extra? And whether they can go for more than a day before they have to empty it? Sometimes it's nice to spend longer away from civilisation.

I'm in the biological wash liquid - not powder - camp, Tesco's finest, have been since day 1. One capful to charge the cassette with a splashl of water, any more causes a chemical smell and I try to empty it every day although we have gone as long as four days without problem. I will admit to thinking about a SOG on our last trip, but we both were having digestive "problems" so it wouldn't really have helped..................:blusher:

Better now.

Yes, I meant liquid... I have also tried Vanish powder - seemed to be about the same, but as I say, I'm new to MHs and learning all the time.

I found the bog seats are so small if you close your legs you can make a perfectly good airtight seal.... Just don't fart, the extra pressure will break the seal

We have had SOGs or Thetford alternative fitted to our current moho and the previous two so haven't used any chemicals for over 10 years. I empty every day which would waste a lot of chemical if I used it.
I get the sweet smell of success!

Actually, having gone all routes (blue, green, bio, SOG), it is my opinion that the way to go is frequency.
Given that, for us, the standard 17l cassette is about a day and a half max (dodgy prostate and diuretics in hot weather), nothing you can put in will have the slightest breakdown effect. Empty every morning......weighs less and no additives means free. Win Win. :D:D:D

Sog and blue here !

I did fit a SOG in my last van and it was very effective with no additive but the I emptied every day

At some venues we go to, 4 days, no facility's to empty, apart from portaloo's which is frowned upon. put's new meaning to fully loaded :p

To the SOG owners, does it require the flap to be closed after each use ?
We tend to leave it open, particularly overnight. Only gets closed for emptying or when moving.
I found Bio washing liquid ok in UK but in warmer climates found it less effective so started using Blue from the Range. £7.99 for five litres. Cheap enough.

Why has it stopped working?

Bio liquids work perfectly - as long as

You have not murdered the bio bugs ---------by cleaning/rinsing out the toilet with ANY chemical, - especially Bleach! - Or toilet blue!
You have added enough bio liquid for the size of cassette.
We only clean the toilet bowl with the same bio washing liquid.
I prime it with 100ml of Bio liquid. If it starts to smell add another 50ml. We can go 5 days without emptying the cassette (19Ltr) and without any pong, even when you empty it.

If you left it open with a sog the fan , sucking the stinky smell outside, would be going constantly.
Why leave it open btw ? Surely it would smell .......

Sold our SOG as we had a La Strada with fibreglass door and body.

Now have Hymer with smelly toilet and wish I had kept it.

We no longer use Blue as we have a Septic tank in Spain and when we visit friends, they have the same. On Islay, they were installing a point in Port Ellen when we went to stay with a Friend. Mrs TM had put blue in, so we could not empty.

May try the Tesco Liquid

5 Days "we" do you not drink?

Default position should be closed, if you try that it will certainly reduce the odour issue massively

Had a SOG in all vans for 10 years. Toilet got a big smelly recently, found out I had crushed the SOG pipe all sorted no whiffs now. You do need to change the filters regualy to avoid outside smells.
I always empty when we can nothing worse than being caught with a container full of sh*t with nowwhere to empty but we do carry a spare cassette & a spade.:)
One of the annoying things with the current van it's got the stupid swivel loo which only lasts 3 days, can get 4 days out of a bench loo.

Ok this might be too much info for the delicate among us but my toilet does not smell I only pee in it and empty it regularly in hedgerows when desperate down storm drains when needs must, I do not put toilet paper in it and I poo in a bag I line the bowl with a biodegradable small bin liners do what I need to do and tie it all up neatly like you would when picking up dog poo and dispose of it in dog poo bins it is kept in an airtight container along with my dogs dodos until I can dispose of it.

I find emptying everyday to be the best. No chemicals and reduced weight.(y)

As an aside a so called friend on this forum collared me as I was passing with cassette in hand. His greeting was "I see you're carrying it as well as talking it"

Nevermind, at least I felt relieved:D2

Are you serious or is this a wind-up?

One way of getting a nice smelly toilet is to only pee in it, they stink something awful, needs the brown stuff in it to get the bacteria working.

sog and a squirt of the bio works for us we can do three days no smell
