Checking Alternator (1 Viewer)

Yesterday STOP and BATTERY warning lights came on, with a clicking sound from front end of van.
Forum search suggests possible problem with EBL. Is there any way I can check alternator is ok without meter. Considering dissconnecting EBL from feed whilst driving, can live without electric if need be.
Renault master 2.5 Dethleffs 7014 Schaudt 99 EBL.

Turn all your lights, heater, everything on.
Rev the engine and you should see the lights slightly dim when the engine returns to tickover.
This will be barely noticeable though due to the fact modern alternatives have quite high outputs at low speed.

I assume you have a habitation control panel which shows the voltage of both the starter and hab batteries. Perhaps you only have warning lights !!!

Anyway, start the engine and check the panel. If voltage readout, then this should show 14.4v on the starter battery. If just indicator lights, then the light display should improve.

At least this should show if the alternator is working to charge the starter battery. You may find that you get different results between engine and hab battery. If it's the latter then probably the EBL is at fault.

Well, you don't seem to be getting any charge to the engine battery.

Does the ignition light (on dashboard) stay on with the engine running? This would indicate a problem with the alternator.

If ignition light goes out, check the fuses on the engine battery near the positive terminal.

Stop and battery light stay on, what would class as ignition, all remaining lights go out.

I have this happen on rare occasions.

Disconnect the earth lead on starter battery, give it a min and reconnect again.

Happened 3 times in the past few years. Give it a go, can't lose anything by it.

Run engine with meter on battery...12.5v
Turn on headlights then check voltage with meter.
No difference (unlikely) or less battery volts indicates charging fault.
Most likely alternator but could be a bad wiring connection somewhere....my money is on the alternator.
Mine was intermittant for about a week, when i stripped the alternator the slip rings had worn away to nothing and the brushes badly burnt.
A common fault on Valeo alternators....it had only done 82000 miles.

Dont know if yours is a 'smart' alternator but the d+ wire tells the alternator how many amps to produce.
More volts on the d+ = higher amps.
It works via the engine management computer and if the EMU cant send a voltage signal to the alternator it wont charge and will bring on the STOP light.
Check the B & d+ terminals on the alternator for corrosion and tightness.
