Bin thinking.........

As membership of MH Fun is not given out when buying a new 'van, nor is it routinely talked about when buying second-hand, WHERE do people new to the game get all their info' from? It's not like buying a car is it? There's soooo much to learn.

When I bought my first 'van, it was on a whim. I just fancied joining the outdoorsy set and was highly enthused after a mate of mine bought a motorhome. He was the sort of guy who seemed to have every gadget g in his 'van, even down to a thing that gets boy scouts out of horses hooves! His enthusiasm was infectious BUT, I was coming from a starting point of thinking that black waste had something to do with coal mines!

Moving on, having trawled t'internet, I came across MHF and it was like being a sinner dipped in the font. I began to pick up the jargon and it wasn't long before I could mix it with the gillet and crocs brigade. Bollards, EHU, grey waste dumping, cheap stuff, levellers and free-loading tossers :D2 all became part of the steep upward learning curve and vocab'.

But what of those that haven't been dipped in the font eh? Apart from rallies and shows, Fun stickers are rarely seen. This means that there must be thousands of folk coiling their EHU lead around a reel or winding out awnings in a gale.

Do they just go blindly on?

i traveled most winters with my parents . started when i was 7 in 1962 . used to have 6 weeks or sometimes 8 weeks traveling . took every opportunity as i grew up to travel . brought my lads up doing the same .
one flew out to alicante only this year to spend a few weeks with us .
this winter we have spent several weeks now doing places havnt been for years .
mind some of the locals still remembered us . here at canero was last here 5 years ago.
was at prai xilloi for three nights and two of the locals remembered us from about twenty years ago.
was in vw camper then . like going back in time .
best way these days is get good maps . we use mapamax mapbook of spain and portugal , but still have a map from 1974 thats good for old roads .
stay off toll roads . m,ways . avoid dual carriage ways . ..n roads are great.
another way we use is closest road to the sea . keep it on your left or right depends where your heading . and drive slowly .

It's not rocket science to work out you need to put water in the motorhome or dispose of waste and if practically minded most things can be worked out with a little thought. Making beds is necessary is pretty straightforward and if you can use a cooker at home you can use one in a motorhome, same with the fridge, and all new and the majority of used motorhomes come with user manuals for their services/components and if they don't there is a wealth of information on the internet.

On the other hand, if one is not practically minded or cannot be bothered to think things through, then is a case of stumble blindly on.

I'm sure it is all pretty straight forward, but if you've never done it, it's the unknown. Pick up van Thursday and although I've read mhf forums through and through, it's still going to be all new to me, but I'll get there in the end.

Mickey.

We knew virtually nothing about being a motorhomer until we bought one. A quick google took me to MHF and I think I signed up very quickly. Never looked back.

Sometimes when Ican chat and hold a conversation folk think im pretty knowledgeable.

Had I not joined fun I wouldn't have gained half as much knowledge as I appear to know.:)

We had been motorhoming for many years then given up for a while.

When we returned things had moved on. More sophisticated heating systems etc so we looked on the web for advice and came across MHF by chance.

Definitely the. Best internet find we have ever made, bags of info, hours of entertainment and lots of suggestions of where to go, (some of them are even printable).;)

Jim, you seem to think I am in some way critical of the OP, that's not the case, or of Fun and that's not the case either. I was referring to the general basics not being rocket science and I don't think they are. The items you have listed , are, I would say, specific and not generally basic. By the way I joined in 2008 and although these posts are mine I know they were not in the first year.:D

We joined 5 years ago after being on the "dark side" - honest, we didn't know any different! - and it was the best £10 we've ever spent.

We carry with us and give out intro cards all the time but it never ceases to amaze me how many motorhomers we meet who have never heard of MotorhomeFun, even at the Shows. Having said that motorhomers do tend to be independant people so perhaps they don't go looking?

Been obsessed by motorhomes since a child, read everything i could about them and bought the motorhome mags long before getting my first van.
am a member of both MH'F' forums, get different things from each.
Have learned so much from others and met some great people, still on a learning curve.

I really cant remember how I fell over the Fun site and its only been here a while o_O

But it has been invaluable source of info, hell we would never have gone to N Z if not for this site.

We would never have bought our first MoHo if not for this site (y)

All in all well worth the subs with plenty of info to be had, ohh did i mention the p**s taking :D
Its worth it just for that.

So keep up the good work (y)

Been motorhoming for 15yrs.had an American RV for 7yrs,Now got a Niesmann Bischoff Arto 88F
Even after 20yrs of camping ,caravanning and motorhoming, with trailer tents ,folding campers ,caravans,RV,s and motorhomes ,every time we go out there is a new problem and we learn something new .We try to resolve things ourselves if we can but there has been many times we have turned to the forum as a resource (y).But for everything that has gone wrong for some strange reason we still love our hobby.(y):)

At a slight tangent, is there a flyer/compliments type slip I could print out and keep on the van to give out. I used to have a card with the Funster details, which I didnt retrieve last week when explaining how Motorhomefun works. Cheers

I have had campers for close to 40 years but still spend a fair bit of time here most days.
There is hardly a day goes by that I don't learn something or find out something new.
Then we are able to give something back to new members,no matter how small or trivial.
If it helps somebody even in a small way it makes me happy too (y)

When I was 14 I used to hitch hike up to Suffolk with mates and camp along the beach. Great times, then I moved up to a caravan when the kids came along, then a motorhome so was pretty well versed when we purchased our first motorhome...I guess talking to other campers gave plenty of good tips.
