If you are wondering why your pc is slow or where all your date allowance has gone there is a big win 10 update being downloaded and installed.

updated mine, everything seemed okay until I opened one of my excel files to see the layout had been corrupted. Checked other files and found all the ones with a graph in the data had also been corrupted. The page format tabs where greyed out and other tools not working. Found a solution by connecting to a printer and was then able to correct the layout

Thanks for that. It is version 1607 apparently, I've just checked on mine and I still have 1511 - so perhaps something will happen soon. It is running slowly but I thought that was because I was backing up all my photographs - I've sent sixty odd Gb up into the clouds over the last few days!

I've tried checking for updates but it doesn't show up. I've also just read it is being rolled out in phases, starting with newer machines first - so my steam powered PC will probably get this next year. :)

Edit: Just found out how to download it manually. In the update window click on the "Learn more" link. This takes me to a page where I can select the update.

I may live to regret this - it is downloading...

Just tried and now downloading. Doesn't seem particularly slow.

    Yes. It's update #12341232546

They're hoping they might finally have it working properly soon.

    Snap.

Can't remember the last time I even noticed a system update never mind being inconvenienced by one.

Too late, it's already gone into auto-destruct mode and is installing the update.

Of course, this is why I love Microsoft. You just don't get this sort of nail-biting, edge of the seat tension with other operating systems.

Well that's odd. Version 1607 downloaded on my Windows 10 computer back on 24 August. Did so without any problems at all, although I think it took a while and a couple of restarts before it was finished. At the time I was over in the USA staying with our daughter, so that may be why I got it earlier.

Edit - just checked for updates and only got the usual Windows Defender definitions update.

The installation froze at 82% and stayed locked for an hour or more. So I re-booted it and it reinstalled the earlier version which is now working fine. Another exciting day in the World of Windows. :)

I bought a laptop last year that came with windows 8.x. I don't use the laptop much but when I do need to use it I don't want to have to deal with 100's of MB's of downloaded updates. 10+ applications nagging to be updated and what usually ends up as an hour or more waiting before I can can actually use the laptop. Then just as I am starting work it wants to reboot. Then to cap it off it nags the hell out of me to upgrade to Windows 10..

It was so bad that even for a computer I use very rarely I decided to put the 30 minutes in to upgrade it to Linux. I hadn't had Microsofts software on any of my systems for well over a decade. This brief intrusion of MS into my life makes me wonder how they are still in business. It is the most God awful OS ever. If only those on Windows would/could try out a proper OS that is based on Unix. I don't care which one, Linux or OS/X are both fine. But please everyone stop giving MS money and they may eventually learn how to write a decent OS.

Download didn't take all that long but the update itself took an hour or so, which didn't matter because I didn't want to use the machine during that time anyway. We will use similar periods to update the other machines.
That is never going to happen because there are goodness knows how many more real world applications written for Windows than there are for Linux. One might say that if only those on Linux would develop a practical range of applications then they might eventually start to achieve a larger market share.
