Not on mine there isn't!!.......had enough of microsoft et al helping themselves to my data allowance via clouds and updates.

Free version of windows 10....refused, all cloud systems and automatic updates off!!

updated mine, everything seemed okay until I opened one of my excel files to see the layout had been corrupted. Checked other files and found all the ones with a graph in the data had also been corrupted. The page format tabs where greyed out and other tools not working. Found a solution by connecting to a printer and was then able to correct the layout

Thanks for that. It is version 1607 apparently, I've just checked on mine and I still have 1511 - so perhaps something will happen soon. It is running slowly but I thought that was because I was backing up all my photographs - I've sent sixty odd Gb up into the clouds over the last few days!

I've tried checking for updates but it doesn't show up. I've also just read it is being rolled out in phases, starting with newer machines first - so my steam powered PC will probably get this next year. :)

Edit: Just found out how to download it manually. In the update window click on the "Learn more" link. This takes me to a page where I can select the update.

I may live to regret this - it is downloading...

Is this a new version of Windows 97?

Yes. It's update #12341232546

They're hoping they might finally have it working properly soon.

Too late, it's already gone into auto-destruct mode and is installing the update.

Of course, this is why I love Microsoft. You just don't get this sort of nail-biting, edge of the seat tension with other operating systems.

Well that's odd. Version 1607 downloaded on my Windows 10 computer back on 24 August. Did so without any problems at all, although I think it took a while and a couple of restarts before it was finished. At the time I was over in the USA staying with our daughter, so that may be why I got it earlier.

Edit - just checked for updates and only got the usual Windows Defender definitions update.

The installation froze at 82% and stayed locked for an hour or more. So I re-booted it and it reinstalled the earlier version which is now working fine. Another exciting day in the World of Windows. :)

I bought a laptop last year that came with windows 8.x. I don't use the laptop much but when I do need to use it I don't want to have to deal with 100's of MB's of downloaded updates. 10+ applications nagging to be updated and what usually ends up as an hour or more waiting before I can can actually use the laptop. Then just as I am starting work it wants to reboot. Then to cap it off it nags the hell out of me to upgrade to Windows 10..

It was so bad that even for a computer I use very rarely I decided to put the 30 minutes in to upgrade it to Linux. I hadn't had Microsofts software on any of my systems for well over a decade. This brief intrusion of MS into my life makes me wonder how they are still in business. It is the most God awful OS ever. If only those on Windows would/could try out a proper OS that is based on Unix. I don't care which one, Linux or OS/X are both fine. But please everyone stop giving MS money and they may eventually learn how to write a decent OS.

Download didn't take all that long but the update itself took an hour or so, which didn't matter because I didn't want to use the machine during that time anyway. We will use similar periods to update the other machines.

That is never going to happen because there are goodness knows how many more real world applications written for Windows than there are for Linux. One might say that if only those on Linux would develop a practical range of applications then they might eventually start to achieve a larger market share.

The problem is that many, myself included, are not technically savvy enough to do that nor even know what Linux or OS/X is!

I have no intention of trying to master another operating system at my advanced age and always manage, eventually, to set all updates to manual and even managed to stop the nagging to update to 10 thanks to info gleaned from this forum, may have even been from your good self:)

I've just checked Jill's PC (same as mine) and the update to 1607 was installed on 24th August. It was so massive and troublesome that she didn't even notice it

On the Vivobook which I use in the van I've had to download the update manually using the Learn More route as described above (it is currently downloading). Because that machine is only used in the van I want avoid updates whilst we are away as much as possible so I follow a regime of updating before we go away (and sometimes more frequently if we have a long time between trips). That way I don't have to wait to use it when I want to and the update process doesn't cause me any hassle because it is happening in the background whilst I am doing something else.

I used to like XP, but once I upgraded to Windows 7 I preferred it. However we now have windows 10 now on both my new laptop, which was pre-installed with Windows 10, and wife's older desktop, which had Windows 7 on it. On the desktop it was by the easiest upgrade I have ever done to Windows. No data or programmes lost, so no need to reinstall anything, and once it was finished it recognised all the programmes on the PC and worked with them all.

Windows 10 can be set up so that it operates similarly to Windows 7 or XP. Once I had used it for a day or two I prefer it to the earlier versions. Both machines start up and close down much more quickly, and the same applies to programmes. And, because my laptop has a removable keyboard and touchscreen, I can set it to tablet mode and it works well as a tablet as well.

Well that was easy enough.
Started the update, went up to the bread shop, came back and did some gardening, came back in the office and it was all done. No problem at all (y)

Given it is that old it may be worth checking on device drivers for older components.

Mine has frozen twice during the update, once at 82% then at 52%. Rebooting causes it to reinstall the original W10 version.

I will wait until the update rolls out naturally to me, in the hope they may have sorted it by then!

That is never going to happen because there are goodness knows how many more real world applications written for Windows than there are for Linux. One might say that if only those on Linux would develop a practical range of applications then they might eventually start to achieve a larger market share.

For 90% of people who don't use specialist application Linux is fine. Linux does have a practical range of applications.

On my Linux box I have;

Gimp and Inkscape for graphics editing. (photo's and vector)
Firefox and Chrome for web browsing.
Libre Office for spreadsheet and word processes etc.
Skype
Thunderbird for email.
VLC for watching videos
Openshot for video editing.
Banshee for music
Dropbox for sharing files
Wine for running windows applications (only use this for world of warcraft at christmas at the moment.)
handbrake and mkvmerge for transcoding videos.

If you only use your computer for web browsing, email, word processing, spreadsheet, the odd picture edit and video edit then Linux is more than up to the job. And there is very little to learn as it does things pretty much the same as windows if you get the right desktop environment.

The beauty of linux though is the software all comes with the OS. When you want some software to do a certain thing you simply open the software manager and search for it. Then click install. It is installed and works straight away without a reboot. When an update is available a tick at the bottom right corner turns into an exclamation mark. You click on this and enter your password and ALL software is updated in one go without any reboots being needed. It runs in the background without slowing your computer down.

My previous post was a bit tongue in cheek. However I did say either Linux or OS/x or any other Unix based OS. Linux has come a long way in it's 25 year life. It is no longer an amateurish and for techies only OS. You can choose from a range of Desktop environments so it can be really technically competent, or you can use an OS/X like front end or a windows like front end. As you get used to it you can start playing with the configurations and in my case I have a mix of windows / OS/x and linux looks to mine. I have changed it to suite me rather than changing my way of doing things to suite it.
