Is there a trick to upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows latest?
Or is it even possible?
Phil

This cant be correct, its the current version. Maybe some old build of windows 10?

It appears to change with every major update in April they said support would end in November this year.
They will probably carry on supporting it until the new operating system is launched which will probably be next year. Looks like they will be moving to a PAYG system where you will have to pay annually.

The 2020 date is a bit misleading, though Microsoft have published it. The reality is if you let Win 10 update itself (like an app) it will continue to be supported. As you suggest I think the support for versions not updated will end in 2020 but some reduced form of support for early versions will go on to 2025.

I guess at some point as Win 10 "evolves" it will stop running on old hardware at some point so it will be that you have to change not the software. :)

i read somewhere, windows 10 will be around for a while yet, albeit with regular updates?

If your PC was designed to run on Vista that means it is going to be historic in IT terms. You'll need to check the specifications for Windows 10 and your computer to see if it is even compatible.

Exactly what I was thinking, even if it CAN run Windows 10 (which I doubt) you're unlikely to be able to get suitable drivers for your graphics, sound card etc so will in effect 'kill it'.

As stated in other responses you can't upgrade from Vista to 10 as it has to be a clean install.
As also mentioned your laptop will be getting on a bit and it's doubtful it will actually be capable of running 10 effectively. I upgraded a Vista Business laptop a few years ago to Windows 7 but it failed the upgrade to 10 checks.

You may want to consider trying to put Linux MInt 19 on it which is quite user friendly, free and a lot of the gang on here run it (myself included) who could give some support if you get stuck.

You're other option, of course, is buy a whole new machine.

Rumours of Microsoft going down the subscription route (as they have done with Office, 2019 version is alleged to be the last local install version ever) have been circulating for a wee while now but they keep denying it. So, you'll obviously believe them!
Believe they may be reducing the twice annual updates to one shortly so..........................
Latest build of 10 is 1903 and I think 1803 (a year ago) goes off support in the next couple of months.

Windows 10 is not being replaced. It is constantly updated, with 2 releases per year. As long as you follow the updates, there is no end of support. I have updated my PCs at home and at work for the last 3 years with every update and never had a problem.

Thanks to all for your combined expertise.
I am thinking it's probably time for a new laptop, bang goes more hard earned.

Are these updates the one's where when you're going to switch off it says "update and shutdown"?
Or are they more involved?

Assuming you've not disabled Auto Updates yip that'll be them. You should also get "Update and Restart" as an option.
If you want to know what version you're running -

Phil. Before you go out and buy a new laptop give Linux Mint a try. As has been said you can download it for free. You can then install it onto a USB drive and run it from that USB. This means that at this point you are not altering you current laptop. This gives you a chance to see what Mint is like and give it a go.

Thanks to all for your suggestions.
The diagnosis on the failure to start-up properly was diagnosed as a failing hard drive, replacement cost about £100.
So taking this cost, the machines age and your suggestions above I have scrapped the old one and am spending some (more) of my children's inheritance on an up-to-date laptop.
RIP old faithful laptop.
Phil

Glad I read this. Turns out my Windows didn't pick up the 2019 upgrade. Downloaded and installed it now and all OK. Could have sworn I had automatic upgrades switched on.

ive got version 1903 sitting in a loop wont install until i delete AVG and wont regognise that I have
deleted it dozen attempts so far.
it seems many people are stuck in this loop with little hope

It is a fact that it is best to leave third-party anti malware out of Windows 10. Microsoft has developed a very good suite of protections and other products only wreak havoc in the internals of W10.

And it'll keep happening! Microsoft's only solution for one of my Windows 10 Pro (1809) laptops is a clean install as no other solution they offered works! If I'm going to have to do that I might just go for Linux Mint 19.3 instead!

Microsoft is not responsible for the behaviour of third party software. If you think there is one OS on the planet that is trouble-free, you're in for some disappointment.

I understood that McAfee was considered the best protection for Windows 10 !!

Our enterprise customers are all moving away from third party anti-malware and stick to Microsoft Advanced Threat Protection. Windows Defender, that is part of standard Windows 10 is a subset of ATP and is really all you need. In any case, common sense is your first line of defense and anti-malware your last one.

Which score Eset best amongst the paid for packages and Avast and AVG the best for the free ones for PCs. Not much between them though. Avast and AVG are now owned by the same company.

Not really what I was saying.
MS are at a loss as to why 1809 on the laptop won't update to 1903 as they can't see any conflicting software or hardware issues.
It seems to be a common occurrence with 1903 update.

Well I got 1903 without any problems, but I did not have AVG installed. I used to use it on my previous laptop running XP but got very concerned about the way that it left sneaky little bits of software even after I deleted it, so vowed never to use it again. I suspect it is them up to those same old tricks which is stopping the latest update from working.

Windows Defender is very good so you really shouldn't need any other anti-malware stuff now, in the past yes, but we don't bother now.
