So today I decided to wind out the awning for the first time. I knew there were problems and that a new something was required. First i tried winding it out, very carefully. The forward end started to wind out but the rear stubbornly stayed put. Something was'nt disengaging. As the photos show, sometime in the past the front end has taken a knock and has broken, along with a small green trigger bit from inside. It's this I suspect needs replacing. Don't think it's a Fiamma, does anyone recognise the make?

that's an older omnistor awning by the look of it. From before being taken over by thule. There are videos on youtube showing how to dismantle and repair. That is if you can still get the older parts

It's an Omnistor, now Thule. I had this problem a long time ago and finished up using BFI and broke the catch, it never would close properly after that but worked fine.

It's an Omnistor 5000. I got it open at last. However at 23 years old the plastic innards and endcaps have decayed [u/v, weather etc] and are getting brittle. And are there any spares on line for a 5000 - Nope. So it looks like I'm going to be spending on a new s/hand awning in the future.

well I tried Reimo, and it looks like the inards for the 5000 are the same as for the 5002 and 5003, but they only deliver within Germany [at the moment] kept a note though.

plenty of parts on ebay for the 5000/5002

Just a heads up for anyone following this thread. I picked up end
bearings for a 5002 on the say-so of another person [not this site] that the 5002 and 5000 bits were identical. They're not. You will need a proper 5000 set. Anyone want a set of 5002 end bearings?

You might try giving Rose awnings a call. They are Omnistore experts

Tempted just to go without. I seem to have collected a fair amount of foliage on my recent trip/
If you buy a pop up, you can fix the awning anytime to suit, you can store it in your garage at home till you have the parts. It will improve your payload as well. We hardly ever use our awning and if I had a choice on a van I would not have one again. Never had issues except having to wind in at night due to wind etc. Pop up, no issues. (y)

We have a large wind out awning, I have to say it’s useful in summer, otherwise it’s a parasitic drain on weight for nothing!

I only have it as it was already fitted, I would never pay the price of a new one.

Begining to have similar thoughts

Used ours for the first time on Wednesday to keep the rain off, it then rained heavily (Scotland) went to take it down and made a rookie error dropped one leg down and got drenched.

Must stand inside the awning so not to get wet, lesson leaned.

Yesterday put it up again to keep the sun off, when winding it back in undid the clip on the leg while looking down, frame hit me hard on the back of the head.

It stayed closed tonight

We had an awning fitted to our Duetto and the current Rienza as built by Autosleeper. We only used either of them a couple of times. We don’t stay long in one place to justify winding it out. I pulled on to a pitch in France and caught a large tree branch with the front casing. Lots of scratches but no major damage.
I always have the thought of it being caught by the wind or going faulty and not being able to wind it in.
I was called out to a motorhome with an awning that had gone over the top in the wind. Not a breakdown but you can’t drive without winding it in first. If you take the awning off the van what do you do with it then. The site won’t like an awning dumped in there bins. Between myself and the owner and a borrowed ladder we took it off and managed to compact it enough to get it in the van via the back doors.

We always have one front leg lower than the other when it rains so the water runs off. I also stand well away from the van when we leave a pitch after rain. One drenching from the roof taught me that!

Good advise, too late, but good all the same

I have a Takonta Tarp stored away somewhere and a couple of ali poles that nest together. I suspect they will be offered up in due course. For the time being the rollout awning works, after a fashion, so I'm not spending any more money on it. I'll add a jemmy, tyrelever, large hammer and suitable screwdrivers to the van's inventory in case it breaks on the road. :)
